So can get a copy of the passport.

The translation dude said once I have that he can take that, and copy of my birth certificate to MBK to the Ministry of Foreign  Affairs to get stamped.

Phew!!!

Then back to local office and try again !!!

Just for info the Embassy certified passport copy can be done by post. Saved me a trip from Buriram to BKK.

OK Thanks. It's not famous where I live. Our lass hasn't heard of it, neither has her sister or her Mam.

That was my experience at Bang Pa In Amphur.

They requested a certified copy of British passport at the Embassy which was then to be translated at MFA.

Also my birth certificate just translated at MFA.

Renewed my license in May for the first time they wouldn't accept my yellow book, told me if I used it my license would only be good in Rayong. Wasn't going to argue with them. So off too Immigration for the certificate, two and a half hours of driving

I (also) had no problem using the yellow house book as proof of address and my DL has my Thai ID-number. However, as so often, there might be differences in procedure in other provinces.

She gave us a contact for translating said documents into Thai.

I'd double-check, but usually the certified copies and translations need legalising by the Consular section of the MFA before being accepted by the Amphoe.

Yes it does have that rather odd statement. But so what?

"So what", I thought an ID card was to verify who you were............🤭

I thought the Pink ID card was not valid outside the issuing area.....

Someone who speaks / reads Thai could possibly best answer what it states on the back of the card,... but from what I can understand , the card IS valid outside the issuing area if one has additional identification to accompany the card (where I suspect a valid Visa in one's passport would suffice in that case - or possibly just an image of one's passport and visa on one's smartphone).

I've never put that to the test. When going out of province, I take my passport.

I find the Pink-ID most helpful in different areas.

I remember in that K Bank in Hua Hin market village where one of the female staff customer "service" assistants,  was refusing any other ID rather then my passport. I was not even making a withdrawl but making a chunky deposit on an account that was opened in another city.

All this to say that in Thailand, depending on the person behind the counter, rules change, are made up and nothing is consistent. The passport rules and all the other local ID's (DL, Pink Card etc) seem of little use depending on where and with whom you deal.

This has been a long running debate with the 'terms' inaccurately quoted by those who for some reason are against the Pink ID.

The comment is often made that 'if someone carries a pink ID they cannot leave the area of issue'....  which is incorrect, as the additional wording states: "except for those with holding alien identification card or those who have received written permission".

In this context an 'alien identification card' is your Passport - there is no limation on travel.

There is no apparent limitation on the validity of the Pink Card outside of the area of issue if you also carry 'alein ID'.

A lot of such issues depend on whether your bank account is was opened using your Yellow House Book and Pink ID as ID, or if your account is linked to the number on your pink ID.

IF you opened your bank account with your passport, you cannot use your Pink ID when accessing that account (oddly, 'sometimes' even when making a deposit - but that varies from teller to teller).

I have 3 Thai Bank accounts with different Banks.

2 of them opened with a Pink ID - I never have an issue using that Pink ID to carry out transactoins.

However, the other account was opened only with my Passport (25 years ago) - thus only my passport is accepted when carrying out a transaction at this bank.

They were incorrect due to 'the terminology' on the back of the licence when it has been acquired using the Pink ID.

The staff at the DLT have lazily taken on their interpretation of that terminoloty which when translated states:

Restrictions / Restrictions in case of driving outside of the area, use it together with the permit to leave the area.

This is due the Pink ID also having limitations on travel for those without an 'alien ID card' [ a Passport ].

In this case the 'permit to leave the area' is your passport - thus, there is no area restriction on your Thai Driving licence if acquired using the Pink ID, when accompanied with your Passport the Thai Driving Licence is a 'natoinwide licence'...

Yes, if you want to continue your Thai-SS-Health after your job ends - full coverage for 420 Baht/mo flat-rate.  Other reasons also, but for that one, is mission-critical.

There is no requirement to hold yellow book or pink ID card to continue paying SS.

Not nationally, anyway. Maybe at some offices.

They are telling people in Sriracha that you need this to continue your coverage I've got two friends that went through it. I don't disagree with you it's just different offices play by different playbooks. I had problems in Sriracha also and had to go up to Rayong where they couldn't have been friendlier. So much easier if all the organizations played by the same Playbook and each office couldn't adjust the rules to fit themselves.

Maybe not useless but I've never needed one in 25 years.

There's a difference between needing something, as in, you can't do without it (i.e. a passport) and something adding a layer of convenience.... i.e. the Yellow house book and Pink ID - both add convenience.

I've never missed having one. That's the point. How could it add convenience if I've never been in a situation where having either would have been more convenient?

If you've never had one, knowing whether or not the card could add a layer of conveneince to your life is something you'd never know.

It is. I know people who have both. They've had no advantage over me anytime or any where.

Where do you think there is added convenience?

Depending on where in Thailand you live, it can be a pain to get.  It was not easy for myself in Phuket.

For myself, the only occasion both Yellow book & Pink ID were of significant value ( and I had no other easy alternative) were on a few occasions where I could use the Yellow book /Pink ID # in lieu of a active Thai tax ID ( with an accompanying caveat that it had yet to be activated as a tax ID). This was significant benefit for me in helping to get an LTR visa ( tax ID# needed to buy Thai government bonds  to show investment in Thailand) and to unfreeze a bank & trading  account in Canada, being frozen until I either produced a foreign tax ID or closed the accounts. At the same time I was refused a Thai tax ID as I was not bringing money into Thailand & I had no Thai income. But the local Thai RD advised my pink ID could be my tax ID after it was activated.

A passport # nor any other ID would work in the noted experience of mine.

This saved me a massive amount of money as I was able to unfreeze a large amount of funds in a Canadian trading account ( and open a new Canadian account) and fortunately reinvest it in a timely manner, with a substantial financial return.

This is a rather remote example and given the pain/ annoyance to get the Pink ID, I do not believe it worth the effort for most ( although obviously it had a massive benefit for me).

However those with large overseas accounts may wish to take note of their foreign financial account regulations and policies.

Agreed. A very remote example. One that nobody likely thought of when going through the rigmarole of getting yellow books and pink ID cards.

Numerous occasions - mentioned plenty of times on various threads...   I've made my statemet which I do not need to justify in this thread, my comments have been made in plenty of other threads on this subject.

My comment will get deleted if go deeper into this as Jack has made it clear this thread is not about the usefulness.

The jealous one's will rant that the Yellow book and pink ID are useless.

Not sure for the yellow book, but any kind of official ID is always useful as it avoids having to run around with one's passport.

Yes, yes okok the same one's will say no problem with photocopy of passport etc etc...but if you fall on one of the many highly "efficient, honest and devoted" chaps in brown uniform with golden wings all over who wants a special falang contribution, no doubt that the photocopy can be challenged in this country full of virtue and Police integrity !! 😇

But it is also a fact that many bank clerks love to harass falangs and often will refuse the Thai driving licence or similar document, other then the passport.   Happened to me in Hua Hin, Market Village branch of Kasikorn Bank on the 2nd fl. and also to few other foreigners who are my neighbours in the developpment.

I have the pink card and dark blue* Tabien Baan (TB) book.

I make no comment re helping with drivers license / renewal because I got lifetime car and mocy licenses decades ago, never need renewal.

*Dark blue TB book because I have PR (28 years).

Call the main office and ask.  They will tell you that you need it, as will local offices.   But I'd be open to any recent (last ~2 years) report of it being obtained without the Yellow Book and Pink-ID.
