Backlash as Popular Sandwich Chain Cancels Franchise Locations

Bangkok - A significant backlash erupted online following the announcement from "Subway Thailand," the well-known fast-food chain, detailing the cancellation of several franchise locations.

 

This decision came after multiple customer complaints regarding food quality, which allegedly fell below the restaurant’s standard. Issues raised included missing ingredients, subpar bread, poor packaging, and food contamination.

 

In their statement, Subway Thailand clarified that the complaints originated from customers who visited locations that had their franchise rights revoked as of 26 July 2024. They advised customers to check for the store number and franchise logo before ordering to ensure they are receiving food made with approved ingredients and standards.

 

The announcement also included a list of franchise stores that retained their rights, alongside those that had been cancelled.

 

Following this post, there was an overwhelming number of comments, as many patrons were unaware that the locations they frequented were no longer operational.

 

Several individuals questioned why certain franchise outlets were still open despite being on the cancellation list and sought clarification on how the company planned to address this situation.

 

In response, the page administrator assured customers that the company is actively pursuing legal action against franchises that continue to operate without rights.

 

The statement emphasised Subway Thailand's commitment to maintaining quality standards and protecting customers from substandard service, reported Thai Rath.

 

The situation has sparked widespread discussion on social media, with customers expressing their concerns and seeking further updates. Subway Thailand promised to provide additional information as it becomes available.

When I first got here to LOS 20 years ago (hard to believe that much time has passed!), I would occasionally go to the Subway near the Walking Street Beach Road entrance. Subway was a standard, just like Mickey D's. I was shocked when that store closed. Great location, ALWAYS busy, I just couldn't understand.

 

Just goes to show the only thing permanent in the world is change.

A long time ago I read this great book:

Fast Food Nation: What The All-American Meal is Doing to the World Kindle Edition by Eric Schlosser (Author) 

 

It exposes the whole industry. And as far as I remember, the above sandwich chain was one of the worst.

The Americans are good at selling their junk to the world with clever marketing. 
But unlike the Japanese they are so far up themselves that they are too stupid to realize things are different in Thailand and you have to train and manage workers differently.

   Not desperate enough to travel all the way to America just to get a sandwich .

   Subway is often the only place to get a baguette from in Thailand , theres no other option

Subway operate as a franchise  , you open a Subway shop and you buy all the ingredients from Subway at an inflated price .

   I suspect that some Subway shops stopped buying from Subway and bought their own ingredients from markets , cutting out Suways monetary income

Subway has received their fair share of bad press, exposing some of the not so quality or healthy offerings.   Maybe people are just wanting to eat healthier.

 

I know I do, and stopped eating their "daily special' many years ago.  From false advertising to suspect ingredients.  Too many choices to bother with wondering what Subway is giving you in your sandwich.
