Most would-be immigrants heading to the British shores speak English. And most of them already have relatives or acquaintances in the UK.

Judging from the number of detections published by the UK government, after a peak in 2022, their number has decreased steadily in 2023.

Trump has been promising to inform Mexico immediately that this will cease and that illegals will be exported!  cost estimate to export them reported as $315 billion!!!

Last time he was prez he said same.

Some body (NYT?) did find out Trump had 3000 illegals working for his companies.... some for many years.

It just talk. US needs immigrants, legal and not. Non American will do 90% <deleted>ty jobs for low pay.

but those that he promises to "export" immediately are illegal immigrants.  The US has one of the highest legal immigrant status in the world.  We are after all for the most part immigrant or our ancestors were immigrants.

Better not to sink the boats.

Rather, just point them in the right direction, the USA.

Most Americans welcome immigrants.

Also, America has far more room for immigrants.

IMHO, the UK is already completely full.

Never mind America, keep the scrounging b@st@rds out of the UK. As one poster said throw them life jackets, much cheaper than keeping them in hotels etc.

The only real solution has been given, sink the boats ,leave them to drown women ,children ( who in their right minds brings  a  child) and Men which make up 90% anway. Anything else will not deter them in any way.

Won't the lifejackets stop them from drowning?

It has already been widely reported and documented that there have been over 30,000 arrivals in the UK so far in 2024.

Arriving illegally, how does having family or acquaintances in the UK entitle them to enter and stay in the UK?

I would also strongly dispute your claim that 'most' speak English.

The numbers are on the up, it's plain and simple.

My comment was to the following statement "If they are truly escaping persecution etc then they should in theory be 'happy' with their first port of call that will accept them".

And my comment is that Afghans, Iran, Vietnam and Turkey coming to the UK are clearly not happy with the first port call that accepts them. They head to the UK likely because they learned English at school. And possibly because they have acquaintances living there.

But, whatever the reason, they are not happy with the first port and language is not the only driver. Otherwise they would head toward the Republic of Ireland, where English is spoken, and where the economy is much healthier compared to the UK.

With regards to the number of immigrants arriving by small boat you are correct: in 2024 they are 14% up v/s 2023, but 24% down compared to 2022.

And how would they cross the 430kms of open water to get there?

2024 is not over yet. Let's see what the numbers are at year end.

Also, I don't believe you 'pick and choose ' your final destination when escaping tyranny and persecution.

Isn't the first port of call without tyranny and persecution the most obvious option? Or is it the one where the 'freebies' are most appealing? If so, it then begs the question what are they actually escaping? Or are they just looking for a rather large handout?

US has the same problem with Mexico and those countries south of there.  The US also has been paying billions of dollars to those countries from which them immigrants are fleeing - the money supposedly is to increase benefits for those very migrants but, it must not be getting that far down the train.  This is one of the reasons Harris lost the race to the White House, but there were many other reasons too.  Trump has been promising to inform Mexico immediately that this will cease and that illegals will be exported!  cost estimate to export them reported as $315 billion!!!  Have to borrow that too.

Here we go again moving from the original thread to the US Election why do they have to bring  Trump and Harris into every thread.

I can't say you are wrong. But aren't they running away from their homeland looking for freedom and a better life.

And where can you hope to have a freer and better life? In a country where you are total aliens, or in a country where at least they can master some rudiments of the local language?

It's not rocket science. It's a matter of commonsense.
