In 2020, Gaetz was accused of child sex trafficking and statutory rape after allegedly having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old. The Justice Department investigated the claims but did not charge him.

The investigation into Gaetz was related to a larger inquiry into his longtime associate Joel Greenberg. Greenberg later pled guilty in 2021 to six felony counts of sex trafficking, wire fraud, conspiracy, identity theft and stalking.

CBS News reported that investigators were specifically looking at whether Gaetz sex-trafficked a minor, if he violated the Mann Act which bars the transportation of “any woman or girl for the purpose of prostitution or debauchery, or for any other immoral purpose” across state lines and if he obstructed justice.

But in September 2022, prosecutors declined to press charges against him. The Washington Post reported that prosecutors were concerned over the credibility of two key witnesses and whether they could secure a conviction if they did bring charges. The case was formally closed in February 2023.

Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, a Republican on the judiciary panel that will decide whether to advance Gaetz’s nomination to the full Senate, said Thursday morning that he “absolutely” wants to see the ethics committee’s final report.

 

“I think there should not be any limitation on the Senate Judiciary Committee’s investigation, including whatever the House Ethics Committee is generated,” Cornyn told reporters on Capitol Hill.

 

He added that while “it’s premature to count votes,” there are “a lot of questions.”

President-elect Donald Trump has quickly named many good choices to serve in his Cabinet. But Matt Gaetz is not one of them.

 

The nomination of Mr. Gaetz as attorney general is shocking and disappointing to those who have followed this man and the serious allegations that follow him. Based on his lack of legal experience and other personal concerns, Mr. Gaetz has neither the experience nor the moral character to serve as the chief law enforcement officer in the federal government.

 

Mr. Gaetz’s minimal experience in the practice of law is hardly enough to serve as the nation’s chief law enforcement officer. Mr. Gaetz should do Mr. Trump and all of America a favor and withdraw his name from consideration. This will save him considerable embarrassment. Our country deserves better.
