Dangerous fake spirits claiming lives from methanol toxicity are sending shockwaves through our neighbouring country. Numerous victims have been hospitalised, with several fatalities reported following consumption of these unlawfully produced alcoholic beverages tainted with methanol. Deceptively harmless, methanol is a highly poisonous industrial substance finds its way into counterfeit or home distilled spirits.

The symptoms of methanol poisoning start off mirroring typical alcohol-induced symptoms i.e. a woozy head or euphoric feeling. However, the impact of this toxic adulterant can swiftly escalate with consequences such as sight-impairment, respiratory difficulties, aggressive body spasms, the body becoming precariously acidic and even death. If one suspects methanol poisoning, it's crucial to seek immediate medical assistance.

Managing methanol poisoning involves prompt, supportive medical attention. This often requires administering ethanol to slow the body's toxic processing of methanol. In several instances, hemodialysis becomes necessary to save lives by extracting the methanol and its harmful derivatives from the bloodstream. Despite these treatments, the urgency of the medical intervention determines the effectiveness and a chance for recovery.

In light of these disturbing occurrences, authorities are sternly advising the public to exercise caution while procuring alcoholic beverages. Illegally distilled spirits, unproven liquors or uncertified herb-based concoctions should be eschewed. It is crucial to source alcohol only from regulated, trustworthy sources. Those experiencing any symptoms post-consumption of dubious alcohol must urgently seek medical help to ward off the possibility of irreversible health complications or worse, fatality.
