That said - he was pretty dumb to be riding around without gloves, jacket, decent footwear etc - but if only riding at the same speeds as all the other scooter riders etc then he's at no different risk of injury himself than anyone else.

That said - anyone riding a scooter will be better of with a jacket.

 

I will not hit a main road on my scooter without gloves, jacket, boots, full face helmet - some may think thats overkill, others think getting on a motorcycle is a death wish...    our risk profiles and tolerances for risk clearly all vary.

 

Pity that moron on the bike didn't sustain some real damage. Bikes and riders like him use 2nd Road as a race track, speeding, swerving from lane to lane, producing a hell of a racket with their bike noise, revving without reason, going through red lights - all the things they can't do at home they live out here.

Traffic, including pedestrians crossing roads, is unpredictable in Thailand. Pedestrians are the weakest participants involved, so bicycles, motorbikes, normal cars, SUVs, pickups, lvans, lorries, buses and large truck need to adapt their on-road behaviour accordingly - which the rider in this instance evidently did not do as no time to react. The fact that the pedestrian was intoxicated is of minor importance. What I have been told about Thai law is that, irrespective of circumstances, the stronger party always carries the bulk of responsibility and liability.

Yup...  I used to ride a real motorcycle, it was a little too big for Bangkok so I now have what  I and many others call a 'scooter' - but I understand that can be misleading... 

... Its a 300cc 'step through' motorcycle....  such 'scooters' are handy in the city with the added bonus of allowing the breeze to flow up the shorts and cool the mangina !

But you are correct about Jomtien second road, It is an F1 race track, all day and night.

you need to be on double high alert,  if on that road as a rider, car driver or pedestrian.

I have been riding bikes, from trail bikes to motocross to street bike to superbikes for 45 years before I got a big bike in Pattaya. My rules are:

1. Ride for the slide. It is gonna happen and I am old now and don't want to hurt more than required.

2. Don't ride at night, that is when the drunks come out (on foot, bike and car).

3. In town, take the Honda Wave, much easier to wiggle around and stop.

4. Drive at speeds similar to traffic, fast lane splitting or shoulder riding is a guaranteed accident.

 

How simple is that??

My favourite bike...   But at 182cm I look like a Circus bear on a trike...  How tall are you ?

The thai if drunk walked into the rd he was lucky then to survive.I,am sure blood test taken from both parties. If the thai was drunk then no case for the bike rider to answer.But I,am sure he will try or his family will to get a payout.Happened to a friend in cnx farang drunk  bike rider sober.The one who walked into the rd dead but all the bike riders fault,but he was sober and the family still blame the bike rider

LMAO....me too, at 185cm I find most bikes to be a little too confined. I just barely fit the SV650x that I recently got rid of, but that was due to being stretched out over the tank to reach the clip-ons. Most of the scooters here have two-step slanted seats too, so makes it even worse, my around the gated-community scooter is a Q-Bix which has a long flat seat so I can stretch out.
