That's not new. When I came my first time to Thailand in 1986, there were brochures under the counter of almost every Hotel, with photos and age and prices of girls for a week/months.

Totally true…

Back then they were “actually” looking for a husband so to get a better life.

I “rented” many times and was happy with it. Not really into changing every day…

Maybe now this is the “modern” version of it. It always has been a “way out” for many struggling women.

Problem is that now they will spend “a whole hell lot of time” on their “phones”…🤣😂😅

hmmm….desperate is what desperate does?

Where do you get your condescending clueless attitude? There's nothing desperate or questionable in any way about being practical and filling a need quickly and expeditiously with no baggage and no real commitments beyond what is required.

Times sure have "changed". "People" didn't "use quotes" "arbitrarily and randomly" back "then".

"the rental wife industry". Industry, eh? So girls are now a product of industry. Factories cranking em out, executive offices, stockholders, and board meetings. So get me an industrial strength Thai girl.

I'm not at all shocked.

What does shock me is all the billionaires marrying second hand wives.

Jeff Bezos with all his money finds himself a 50yo woman .......... why?

On the other hand,

Leonardo DiCaprio gets it right by trading in his used 25yos for new 18yos every few years.

Lauren Sanchez is in fact 54 years old, very well kept and much accomplished.

Leonardo is a bit of a strange one, wonder if he'll ever find a keeper.

I'll never understand why truly wealthy men marry......pretty damn sure if I win the lottery there'll be no wife anywhere to be seen.

I knew of 3 wealthy men who never married, during my 20 years living in Thailand. One of my old mates is worth $XX million. He had a child (whose now 16) with a lady in Canada, but never married her. He once told me that he sends her US$7,000 per month to 'keep' her and the kid. (The kid is looking at attending Harvard in the next few years).

Any time money is paid to have a relationship with another person it is called prostitution.  You can sugar coat it with another name. But a financial transaction for a  girlfriend or wife is just that for the female involved.  She's in it for the money. In what western countries do men pay their wives or girlfriends to be with them?

Would a woman who could be making a decent wage at an office job be doing it, in preference?

The practice, often called “temporary marriage,” sees women from impoverished rural areas become companions to tourists, offering services ranging from casual companionship to acting as tour guides.

what complete and utter nonsense, trying to put a different label on what is known worldwide as ....................... prostitution

if it quacks like a duck.........

Nothing new here, and nothing will change. Why should it? I stopped judging others years ago. As long as there is a need, whether sexual, companionship, or both, everything remains status quo. Do we really have a right to judge others based on how they make this happen?  Where adults make their own adult decisions. Sometimes, it's a business deal; other times, it's an emotional need, so what!

Thailand’s notorious “rental wife” trend is turning heads and sparking heated debates. Dubbed the “black pearl” phenomenon, this controversial practice is thriving in Pattaya’s red-light districts, offering foreign tourists a temporary taste of companionship for a fee.

It's all rental.. just the duration that changes

My late, and very wealthy Swedish friend had the same Thai girlfriend for about 20 years. He said that the difference between her and a Thai lady was that Nah would get up early every morning to make his breakfast, whereas a Swedish lady would never (or be unlikely to) do that.

Unlike in the West, Thai ladies haven't been raised to believe that they should be the same as men, so  more 'traditional' roles of man and wife are more possible?

With all due respect to the author I can't help the feeling that I was reading pretty much the same shock and awe pieces 50 years ago.
