I'm not at all shocked.

What does shock me is all the billionaires marrying second hand wives.

Jeff Bezos with all his money finds himself a 50yo woman .......... why?

On the other hand,

Leonardo DiCaprio gets it right by trading in his used 25yos for new 18yos every few years.

Cause you're not as you said many times you have one yourself.

Age old tradition with a new trendy name

Nothing trendy about the name. It nothing more than the ignorance of some to put them all alongside rent boys.

There is no dispute that Thailand has, like every other country, many involved in prostitution, but there is also a great number of girls just trying to escape poverty. A foreign husband is a fairly common way out and bar scene was little more than the origin of  "dating apps", now widely used in the west.

In the UK, Wetherspoons have a "try before you buy" arrangement on real ale, nothing wrong with tourists taking a similar approach.

Would a woman who could be making a decent wage at an office job be doing it, in preference?

Women are always looking for a better life to upgrade to ,be it by marriage or social arrangement. Having a legal marriage is just more ironclad . There are always a trade off of benefits both ways. To each their preferences so long as nobody is hurt in the relationship. Win win is the way to go.

Nothing new here, and nothing will change. Why should it? I stopped judging others years ago. As long as there is a need, whether sexual, companionship, or both, everything remains status quo. Do we really have a right to judge others based on how they make this happen?  Where adults make their own adult decisions. Sometimes, it's a business deal; other times, it's an emotional need, so what!

Thais would treat it as karma. It is what it is.

Rent v Buy?

Just some of the advantages of renting that I have discovered:

With a rental you can break the contract cheaply.

With a rental you can always get the latest product

If you have a problem with a rental then it is easy to rent a different item.

A rental contract can be as long or as short as you want.

In the long run, renting is far cheaper than buying.

I shall always rent.  I do not intend to ever buy a car.

When you buy, you owned that product. I would say that marriages are also rentals because you do not own the product but instead had a social contract with the other party. A divorce is a broken social contract .

my now Thai Wife of several years had a hair salon in Bangkok for a few years before we met and I lured her to join me in Chiang Mai. We consider ourselves quite fortunate to have found each other but after five years together, she said she did not want to be a "rented wife". This I could appreciate and although I was happy with our unmarried state, I agreed. We have continued to be quite happy without any issues.

Long term unmarried relationship can work only if the lady want to be childless and lonely in their old age which I find most Thais are not agreeable with. After a fruitful long companionship, she would want to move on to something more than the current status quo. That is how I got married to my current wife after 15 years of companionship.

For maximum satisfaction and minimum grief, I have only two rules when it comes to renting wives in Thailand:

1 - Always stick to a one-hour time limit on all rentals.
2 - Always follow rule number one.

Not marrying a lady for an emotional bonding, any physical communion is just soulless union. After hundreds of encounters, it can also make you morph into a soulless individual in this world.

From now on im only renting, for the rest of my life. The things you own always end up owning you

That would be accountability and reciprocally at work.

Thailand’s notorious “rental wife” trend is turning heads and sparking heated debates. Dubbed the “black pearl” phenomenon, this controversial practice is thriving in Pattaya’s red-light districts, offering foreign tourists a temporary taste of companionship for a fee.

The practice, often called “temporary marriage,” sees women from impoverished rural areas become companions to tourists, offering services ranging from casual companionship to acting as tour guides. Contracts last anywhere from a few days to several months, with fees varying based on the woman’s looks, age, and education—ranging from US$1,600 to an eye-watering US$116,000.

Lavert A. Emmanuel’s new book, Thai Taboo: The Rise of Wife Rental in Modern Society, dives into this shadowy world, describing how the practice, once hidden, has now become a significant income source for young people struggling to make ends meet.

“This isn’t just a transactional arrangement. Some women end up marrying their clients, while others maintain long-term paid relationships.”

Inspired by similar services in Japan and South Korea, Thailand’s rental wife trend caters to the loneliness that comes with urbanisation and demanding lifestyles. Tourists, drawn by Thailand’s reputation for hospitality, often initiate arrangements in bars, restaurants, or nightclubs, negotiating terms directly with the women.

Despite its prevalence, the practice operates in a legal grey area. While the Thai government acknowledges its existence, there are no laws regulating it. Critics argue that this lack of oversight leaves women vulnerable to exploitation.

Cultural factors also play a role. Thailand’s relatively liberal attitude towards relationships means these arrangements face less stigma than they might elsewhere. For some, the rental wife industry represents a way to bridge economic gaps, but for others, it’s a troubling reflection of societal inequality, reported News18.

If there are "...no laws regulating it.", then it is NOT "...operat(ing) in a legal grey area."

Geez polish it as much as you want, it's prostitution.  The rented wives are prostitutes  and I know Thailand is in total denial that prostitutes exist in the country.

Of course even when there is no sex or even touching involved.

Our relationship is we like to sing together, or play chess with eachother or play tennis together or a million other things all non sexual.

You won't catch me and my lady singing together.   Or, if you do, I have extra ear plugs and other types of ear protection so you can't hear me!

There is absolutely no difference between "rental wife" and "wife".

One gives the man the power, the other destroys the man.

ALL Wives are on "rent". Every single woman is only with you until you suffer workplace injury and cannot provide for her anymore or you run out of money. Every man knows this very well.

The difference with "rental wives", is that the man controls WHEN the marriage ends and how much is paid upfront, not the lady.

A "wife" is the complete opposite, the "wife" determines when the marriage ends, and how much she'll take from you.  Basically, she gets paid a undetermined sum of money at the end of the "divorce contract."

oh, my ,so much you know about Isaan women,

I always expect a lot of fake information on threads like this.

While the OP is the usual woke article about exploited women that western matrons love to rant over, it's been happening for decades at a minimum. I visited LOS for decades and always had a rental for the duration of my stay. I even had a rental for 8 years that I picked up first night on arrival and waved goodbye to at the airport ( I did not pay her a retainer while not in LOS ).

It was rare to have such a long term rental as they usually had departed  for places unknown the next time I arrived.

Nothing else than prostitution. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Oh, sorry. I forgot. There is no prostitution in Thailand. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Stupid me. 🤦🏼‍♂️

We didn't pay them for sex, we paid them to be with us and they loved sex so much ( unlike western women ) that the sex came free.
