Why Do Ex-Bar Girls Remain in Pattaya?

The OP seems to be referring to women that are no longer hunting for a foreigner. The question seemed to be why don't they go back home when they have the option to.

Maybe because there is hardly anything to do in those villages, no decent shops or restaurants.

They would have exercised that option much earlier if it was of interest. Consider Pattaya - with friends and a vibrant social scene compared to Bumfuknowhere watching rice grow or tapping rubber.....

  • It’s where the money is.

Why do fat, old, drunk, bald men stay in Pattaya?

Where must you be in your life that you spend time thinking, judging and posting about other people‘s choices? So sad.

You know, it is easy to take the girl out of the bar, but not so easy to take the bar out of the girl....😆

In Pattaya I've noticed a particular type of woman that I've seen regularly. These are not one that are out working at night, but they look to have been part of the nightlife scene before. You know the type, they often have lots of tattoos, speak good English, but it's broken English and it's obvious they learned it through their work, and they carry themselves with a kind of sassy confidence that can come across as pretentious smugness.

They might no longer be working directly in the bars, but they stay part of that Pattaya scene, hanging out in expat spots, some running small businesses, or even just lounging around in the same areas that they once worked. The question is why do so many of these women remain in Pattaya even after they’ve left working in the bar scene?

I wonder if they simply wouldn’t be accepted if they went back to their home villages. Many of them come from conservative rural farming areas where being a former bar girl, let alone one covered in tattoos, piercings, and fluent in street-smart English, might lead to social rejection. Back home, they could struggle to reintegrate into a society that looks down on their past choices and their current persona.

Another reason might be that Pattaya offers them a sense of freedom and belonging that they can’t find elsewhere. Pattaya has its own sort of non-Thai culture: it’s a melting pot of expats, tourists, and Thais who are used to the unconventional party scene. There, they can embrace who they’ve become without judgment, and their bold personalities might even thrive in that kind of environment where there is a constant influx of foreigners looking for excitement. Maybe they're even addicted to the perceived thrill of the place.

Of course, there’s also the practical aspect. Many former bar girls have built their lives around Pattaya. They’ve made connections with expats and tourists over the years, some of whom support them financially or have helped them to start a small local business. The city is also full of opportunities for unusual side hustles, things like helping foreigners with basic services, running massage shops, starting some small food business, or operating a market stall. Leaving Pattaya might even mean giving up the only stability they’ve carved out in a place where they actually know the ropes.

It is also possible that some truly enjoy the freer lifestyle I guess. For some, it might not be about necessity, but actually preference. So I wonder if ex-bar girls stay in Pattaya mainly because they have no choice or because they feel they've found a place where they can truly be themselves?

what you observed was probably farang  wives having a night out

The OP says 'I wonder ...'. But how does an AI application wonder?

Did not jump off the band wagon when they could have. They know no other life but drinks, smokes, weed and crack and whatever else. Look at Fellini's "La Strada" made in 1953, an epic film wrapping up the situation quite nicely during post war days.
So they rather massage some old geeks on a barstool, get them cigarettes and some snacks from across the road for little tips - back home there is nothing waiting for them. Eventual kids are either gone or do not want to deal with them as the kids were pretty much neglected throughout the childhood as far as motherly love is concerned.

A vicious circle; instigated by greed, power hunger and face saving - sad actually 😞

Oh, various reasons, depends. Ask the individual if that's an important issue for you.

Most ex-bar girls leave Pattaya, however.

In a rural village money are not easy to earn, while in places like Pattaya and other tourist magnets the chances for making money or running a small succesfull business, anything from a small street kitchem and up, is much higher. Furthermore, "a knight of a white horse" might still pass and be interested in the lady, there no many white knights riding around in rural areas...😉

Don’t you have better things to do than consume yourself with bargirls past and present affairs? Why bother dwelling over a bunch of low-lives?

It happened to me 10 years ago and I have never ben happier in my life. Only difference, she did not come with tatoos.

Good ride ?

Practice makes perfect - as they say.

Probably don't want to face all the judgement and gossip back home.  They're proud that they took care of their family (parents, child, drunken brother, etc.), but they'll still be looked down upon and gossiped about.

While Thai people can appear to be very chilled out and non-judgemental, that doesn't seem to occur in the village.

How is it many are known to have worked in a pharmacy, or hotel reception desk....?  :whistling:

Plus, your village thing is nonsense, earning money is praised, even from you.......:clap2:

If people spend 20 years in a place a good chunk of those people never move. Some people have energy in their 20's to move somewhere but in their 40's they don't have the energy to leave.

Sure, I'm sure the network of aunties all believe that.

As I said, people do have pride in that, but they will still be judged and gossiped about.

As you will be................😉

There is an assumption here that 'many' of these ladies stay.  If you look at the *proportion* of ladies staying vs the numbers that leave, I'd be surprised if it was noteworthy, considering how many thousands must have gone through over the years.

Is that an admission?  I'm not surprised that you probably gossip with people about your trolling antics on here, but I wonder who is lonely enough to listen...  🤔

Perhaps you have a RealDoll that you "gossip" with.  🫣

Oh, the troll card, as expected, please try harder...........:clap2:

Call a spade a spade.  Call a troll a troll.  What's wrong with that?  🤷‍♂️

Agreed. Same w/ any of the thousands of low-level employees w/ no family ties in Pattaya. Most work for a time, then leave. They don't necessarily go back to villages. They may join a business started by a family member in BKK or nearby towns, such a Chonburi or Rayong. And a much smaller proportion stay, for various reasons. You don't have to have tattoos to stay long-term in Pattaya.

All those words...

One word is enough

MONEY

Many are holiday hookers who no longer work the bars. Their sponsors visit them at different times of the year. They have a schedule: Hans from Germany for two weeks, Gordon from UK for 3 weeks, etc. In between they hang out in Pattaya or visit back home.

A post breaking forum rules has been removed.

Reminder rule 14. You will not post slurs, degrading, or overly negative comments directed towards Thailand, Thai people, Thai culture, Thai institutions such as the military, judicial or law enforcement system, or specific locations within Thailand.

Easy, they are waiting for my return to give them the best time of their life.

What a childish comment

It was a depressing read. There is no joy in the life of an inked up Pattaya prostitute. Consider that their likelihood of dying alone and destitute is high. Consider that their likelihood of dying from uterine cancer is many times higher than other women because of their likelihood of being infected with HPV, which also manifests as warts. Consider their likelihood of most likely suffering the effects of long term drinking and smoking. Consider the fact that they most likely have been able to establish more than transactional relationships and are emotionally alone.  It was an article highlighting the fact that the women cannot go anywhere else because of their social stigma.

And  now, here you come along to claim it is a childish comment. You, the person who spews infantile nonsense ad nauseam.

Bro, both GG users have clear mental health issues. It's not even worth reading what they write or responding to them. I have long put them both on ignore. Best thing I've done for myself on AN. Thank me later.
