Tyre Change, How Often Do You Change Tyres

Featured Replies

Just wondered after how many thousands km. do you usually replace tyres ?. Lots of long distance drives, not only city use !

old folk lore was when you can't lose the head of a match in the tread .

When the tread wear indicators are level with the top of the grooves (usually 2mm of tread IIRC).

The tread wear indicators can be seen as little blocks in the bottom of the grooves, easy to see. Otherwise buy a tread depth gauge, replace at 1.5 - 2mm of tread depth.

also is it good 2 do in toyota workshop under guarantee, or anywhere streetside :o

I had to change Ford ranger tyres at 30,000 Km after mostly city driving.

The Good Years on the small Toyota needed changing even though not worn to limits. The tyre place claimed they develop flat spots if parked on hot areas and left for a few days. I had to agree, new tyres fixed the balance problem.

I use larger tyre service centers, get the wheels aligned and get guarantees too.

My 4 y/o Civic has 70,000 km on the original Bridgstone tires and will be replacing soon.

My 3 tear old Toyota Vigo pickup has 40, 000 K on the clock. The original tyre still have plenty of meat on the yet.

i drive 30% around town in Pattaya, and 70% up country visiting the wifes home town.

As others on this post have stated, you should change the tyres when the get down to 1.5 or 2 mm. most tyres have wear bars inside the tread. When the wear bar is flush with the tread left change the tyre.

Whilst Thai's will run them until they are like formula 1 slicks, its far safer to change them before then. Particularly if your driving in the rainy season like now.

Better to change the tyre a bit early than pay a hospital bill after you crash, I think.

Remember your dead a long time. Putting off that date is a worthwhile hobby.

:o

The front pair do nearly all the work including 2/3 of the braking and a blowout on the rear is rarely a big problem. So if money's an issue make sure the fronts are good. 2mm not enough to clear rain from them properly to my mind.
