Transgender Fencer Sparks Controversy with Prestigious Win on Women’s Team

A transgender varsity fencer, Redmond Sullivan, has ignited debate after transitioning to her college's women's team and securing gold at the Connecticut Division Junior Olympic Qualifiers. The competition, held last weekend, serves as a key pathway for American athletes under 20 to vie for national titles in fencing.

Sullivan, who previously competed in the men’s division, was transferred to Wagner College’s women’s team earlier this year. Her victory in the Junior Women’s Foil event in Newtown, Connecticut, marked a significant milestone, earning her an E24 ranking according to Fencing Tracker. This win, however, has drawn sharp criticism from high-profile figures and organizations advocating for fairness in women’s sports.

Tennis legend Martina Navratilova, a vocal opponent of allowing transgender women to compete in female categories, expressed her disapproval, referencing a Reduxx report about Sullivan on X, formerly known as Twitter. Similarly, Marshi Smith, co-founder of the Independent Council on Women’s Sports (ICONS), criticized the NCAA and Wagner College for their decision to allow Sullivan’s participation.

Smith remarked, "The NCAA is repeatedly rewarding the replacement of women in order to champion men in women's sports. This ongoing pattern of discrimination is why we are supporting a female athlete's lawsuit against the organization. Legal action is necessary to hold the National AA accountable for its repeated failures to uphold fairness and equality in women's sports, with fencing being a particularly troubling example."

Sullivan's athletic journey includes competing in track and field events for the girls' team at Daniel Hand High School in Madison, Connecticut, prior to joining Wagner College. Despite her recent success, Sullivan’s prior performances ranked her 48th out of 50 in a Division I women’s foil event and 31st out of 36 in a Division II event. Before transitioning to the women’s team, she was ranked 29th in a men’s foil event last year.

The controversy surrounding Sullivan’s inclusion in the women’s division highlights a broader debate about transgender participation in sports. Critics argue that transitioning athletes may retain advantages gained during male puberty, posing challenges to fairness in female competition. In response, many sporting organizations require transgender women to meet specific criteria, such as undergoing hormone treatment and achieving lowered testosterone levels, before being eligible to compete.

Supporters of transgender athletes, however, emphasize that the transgender community is a small and vulnerable population and that the number of trans athletes remains minimal. The discussion gained momentum after President Joe Biden extended Title IX protections to transgender individuals in 2021, a move that prohibits sex-based discrimination in federally funded educational programs.

Wagner College has publicly affirmed its commitment to inclusivity, stating on its website that it “strives to create inclusive and supportive environments for LGBTQIA+ students.” However, when approached for comment, head fencing coach David Sierra deferred to the university’s media team, which did not respond to multiple inquiries.

The ongoing debate underscores the complex intersection of inclusivity, fairness, and competition in sports, with Sullivan’s victory serving as the latest flashpoint in this contentious issue.

They need to make special sports events strictly for trans to compete against each other. This unfair practice of allowing trans to join the same ranks as women is ridiculous.. They are neither men anymore nor women.. So why allow them to claim being a women when their bodies are biologically that of a man. It is a completely unfair advantage. Even with hormone injections the male is superior to the female in athletics.

I strongly believe there should be more protests objections and control to prevent trans athletes from competing in sports events prior to  competing not waiting unti after they infairly win the contest.

You mean like it used to be?  Men competing against men.

The problem is that we let the woke post-modernist Marxists steal our language in order to justify their fake reality.

Homosexual/Queer became Gay, and then they reinvented Queer again and it came back in vogue.

Transvestite/cross dresser became transexual.

Pro-abortion became pro-choice.

But I never understood why a Lesbian has always been a Lesbian.:coffee1:

I think there needs to be either definite rules in men's and women's sports events regarding what gender a participant qualifies for, or there needs to be two more categories of sports events for transgender men and transgender women.

This seems like the only way to be fair to women.  Otherwise men will simply dominate.

It needs to be male and female sport, with how someone "identifies" being irrelevant.  There needs to be a complete reworking of the rules, if they allow for males to compete in female sport.

No, there does not.  Stonewall started this grift when they realised that attaining equality for gay and lesbian people wasn't good for business and needed a perpetual business model.   Pitting transgenders against women is the almost perfect grift as it is a dispute that can never be settled as to give more rights to one you have to take away from another.

The only way this grift ends is when we go back to the good old days and stop pretending that men can actually become women.

We lost "carpet munchers" as a descriptor not due to wokeism but to changing social standards in grooming habits.

Why can't they recognise they have an unfair advantage and have the decency not to compete in womens sports - or is that what it is really about?

Whether it be God, Buddha, whatever or whoever created us they made it plain and simple two sexes a man and a woman not 32 variants or subspecies

I used to fence competitively - got through to the British Army finals one year, got beaten spectacularly by someone who was in the British Olympic Squad, so that is another story.

But of course this bloke won, (and yes he is a bloke, no matter how he dresses or identifies), twice the size, twice the reach and twice the strength. A complete nonsense.

Chap needs a haircut too!

If not separate leagues, then there have to be definite rules defining how someone qualifies for one or the other league. Examples would be birth certificate, DNA analysis, physical examination, etc...

I don't believe in any delusional God, Buddha, etc., but dividing the human race (and other animals) up into just two genders doesn't seem to work for a small percentage of the population. How we deal with that and treat them is the topic. Rather than deny they exist, I would rather see them accommodated in some way, not just excluded.

Never happen, it would be financially unviable

So instead, we are allowing Women's sports to be devalued by what are effectively cynical opportunists.

Transphobic suggests fear, whilst I would not wish to wake up next to that, I hardly fear it.

Women hold the key to all this. If they refuse to compete against men, then it will be pointless for men  to join women's teams.

As long as they continue to compete they are doomed to continual defeat.

If they don't care enough to do that then I don't see why I should be concerned about it.

Another man supporting women in their right to a fair competition.

Your attempt to use cancel culture is pathetic.

They were probably losers in men's sports so put on a dress and joined the women's team.
