A dramatic explosion occurred at an intersection in Ban Khai, Rayong Province, after a pickup truck loaded with paint cans caught fire. The blaze erupted when the driver inadvertently discarded a cigarette butt, which ignited the truck’s cargo, causing multiple paint cans to explode.

At 17:30 on December 17, Pol. Lt. Chanatchai Wongsriwijit, an investigator from Ban Khai Police Station, received a report of a pickup truck explosion at the Ban Khai Intersection on Rayong-Ban Bueng Road. Firefighters from Ban Khai Municipality and rescue personnel from Sawang Phornkhet Rescue Unit were dispatched to the scene.

When officials arrived, flames were engulfing the back of a Toyota pickup truck, loaded with hundreds of paint cans. The driver managed to escape safely, and no one was found trapped in the vehicle. Firefighters took approximately 30 minutes to bring the fire under control. Upon inspection, the heat had caused most of the paint cans to explode, leaving extensive damage.

The driver, Mr. Nopachad, 52, explained that he was transporting 240 spray paint cans and hardware supplies, all covered with a tarp. He admitted to smoking a cigarette while driving and carelessly discarding the cigarette butt out the window. Unbeknow to him, the butt was swept onto the truck bed, where it ignited the tarp and, subsequently, the highly flammable paint cans.

As flames and smoke became visible through the side mirror, Mr. Nopachad immediately pulled over and attempted to extinguish the fire. However, the flames spread too quickly, triggering loud explosions from the paint cans. Fortunately, he escaped uninjured.

The damage to the paint cans and hardware supplies is estimated to exceed 1 million baht. Mr. Nopachad acknowledged his negligence, stating, “This was entirely my fault.”

Preliminary investigations by police confirm the fire likely started from the discarded cigarette butt, which ignited the tarp before spreading to the cargo. Authorities will conduct further forensic examinations.

How can this happen if they keep the lid on the cans?

Maybe something to do with heat and expansion.

Because if you heat up any aerosol can, the gas inside will expand and increase the pressure (gas and vapours do not absorb the heat). The aerosol can will explode when the pressure inside the can becomes too high, leading to a rupture of the canister.

Remember Aerosol cans typically also contain a propellant, such as compressed gas along with the product itself.

Where they aerosol cans, I was thinking of normal paint cans.

They were aerosol cans. Due to technical problems it is not possible to post pictures, but you can see them at the start of the X video.

 You correct.

But this won't happen straight away.

The aerosol can has a safety feature in the base of the can, it  is concaved. allowing for some heating

The base will expand out , giving more space inside the can, or more time if you look at it that way.
