Are we really better than the Russians, Indians, Arabs and Chinese in the eyes of Thais?

I couldn't agree more. That's someone's mother he's ridiculing, Shame, shame, shame

His sort of attitude, ridiculing elderly Thai ladies, that makes all farangs look bad.

Disgraceful really.

I don't know if I am better than any of the nationalities mentioned in the OP in Thai eyes, and don't know why I should care.

In my view no one is better than me Farmers, IO's, Government Officials etc. I treat them as they treat me, again, I am no better than any of them.

If a person is sober and of decent appearance I am very happy to talk with them, if they are covered in tattoos and have a lot of facial hair, stay well away.

I'm sure that you could give me examples of my "complaining as much as I do"?     And some examples of my pedanticism (not accuracy). Baited breath awaits.

May I be pedantic as well.

The correct spelling is "BATED"

But he does put in a lot of effort.

Oh dear. I guess that's why we towel you up in quite a few sports.

Great Britain population - 68 million

Australia population - 27 million

Paris Olympics 2024 : Australia 18 gold medals. Great Britain 14 gold medals.

Would you like to quit while you are behind, or do you want to keep digging yourself deeper?

One Olympics does not define an entire culture. Many of us consider The Brits to be infinitely more sophisticated and urbane than the vast majority of Aussies, but that's just my opinion, and it certainly doesn't apply to all Brits.

I can accept the British are more urbane than Australians, we are more inclined to call a spade a spade.

OTOH, Britain's football yobbos put all other nations in the shade. I can't recall any Australian fans getting banned from a sporting event, anywhere.

That's quite a skill set you have, to be able to determine gender, skin color and age on an English language forum where everyone uses a pseudonym?

Even more impressive is the fact that he has been able to figure out that, on this English language forum, where everyone communicates in English, there are mostly English speaking users.

It seems like he could give Sherlock Holmes a run for his money...  🤔

But the Aussie players make up for that themselves by cheating and getting caught.....

Some of the stereotypes are based on experience.

I have witnessed pushy, rude Russians. My friend says it's from decades of pushing to the front of the bread line.

I am talking about literally  pushing others in public, from both male and female Russians.

Indians have different standards of personal hygiene.

Thais say they smell bad.

I had a University educated Indian boss in the US who definitely had a different level of olfactory hygiene than what is considered normal in the US.  So this is not necessarily low class Indians, who probably couldn't afford travel in any event.

So some Indians definitely are less concerned about body odor.

If I am in a tourist area I am very reluctant to talk to other Westerners, male or female.

I live in a suburb with essentially no tourist attractions so I am less on my guard here although I don't initiate conversations.

Single Western males are often scammers, weirdos, or tedious blowhards. (Honestly, I wasn't thinking of this forum).

About Thais "They also don't share the same curiosity to learn about other people and their cultures the same way that locals might take more of an interest in those things when one travels to other countries."

I don't find this to be true.  My neighbors ask me questions about my home country, so does the cleaner at my condo, same thing with taxi drivers.

"Since joining this forum I have noticed it is mostly white, older, male, English speakers contributing

The older single western male is more into the bar scene and living and hanging out with the prostitutes in public. Thai kids going home from school share Pattaya songteows with drunken sex tourists taking hookers back to their hotels."

Can you actually prove your comments... I ask for PROOF, not some tossers opinion.

The HiSo Thai people used to admire the British until the old British Embassy was sold off to Central, now we're a laughing stock.

I think Thais in Tourist areas tend to group all 'falangs' together - so do not differentiate between Russians, Germans, Brits, Americans etc, and we're seen as marginally preferable to the mass tourism Chinese/Indians but not viewed as highly as Japanese or Koreans.

Thai social media has created a poor image of Chinese and Indian tourists.

Backpackers let the team down. Totally horrific set of tourists that Thailand wanted to get rid off - that is until Sretta came along and welcomed all cheap tourists.

Backpackers are the reason you are here in the first place.

These kids found all the new exotic places to holiday.

If it wasn't for them you would be still holidaying in Benidorm.

Facts are facts, sorry Charlie but Americans are the best in the eyes of Thais.

I have a Thai friend that says British and Americans are the best tourists.

But then again sometimes talking to Thais they kinda confuse British with Americans.

I don’t know about that. The Japanese don’t seem to be causing as much trouble as we do for example.
You don’t really see the Japanese walking around the tourist traps hand in hand with a little brown tattooed hooker as if it is true love dressed like a dirtbag starting fights with bouncers.

Or Russians, or Chinese for that matter.

There is cultural differences.

The question is do Thais see us as superior to the others the way we see ourselves.

The Japanese and their little brown hookers keep a low profile in Sriracha  in thier clubs where most  other types of foreigners are not welcomed

I'm talking about in the 60's and 70's when money was tight.

these kids found places that normal people had never even heard of.

i know because i was one of them.

Tell me anyone today that has hitch-hiked all the way from the UK to Australia.

Hundreds did it back then.

Just going by working in an English hospital-

Nurses from many nations worked in London hospitals, and often no English nurses on a shift. Whenever I started a shift, if the charge nurse was English i knew it was likely to be a bad shift. The Aussie nurses were far away the best nurses ( I'm not an Aussie and no reason to praise them ).

Then they went and told everyone and in hardly any time they were ruined as the concrete hotels went in. Samui was ruined because Lonely Planet found out about it from the first bagpackers.

We are only really better than the Russians, Indians, Arabs and Chinese in the eyes of Western AN members who are "mostly white, older, male, English speakers" who have been raised since birth to be vehement anti-Russian and anti-Chinese haters.  Their dislike of Indians and Arabs are part & parcel of their colonial upbringing and their world-view that Indians, Arabs, and other POC are "the white man's burden."

Basically most Westerners are cultural racists who feel superior to all others on this planet.
Thais ethnocentrism for the most part is only within the borders of their own country.  Yeah, Thais are unabashed nationalists but it is difficult from them to haul that nationalism to other more advanced countries.  Westerners, especially expats who made their move overseas late in life, take their ethnocentrism with them in their baggage wherever they go.

And "no." I don't count myself among these natural-born Western racists.  I've traveled internationally since I was a young child and was raised in a family who rejected racism in all it's ugly forms.  I was raised to look at people as individuals based on their merit, not as part of the national identify of their country of birth. That latter view just leads to racism.

The issue of racial 'superiority' seems to be somewhat hard wired into us.

I used to think this was just some vestige of European colonialism, which was completely awful and racist.

But then I began to reflect on my own life.

I'm a whitey hispanic, and if I don't open my mouth and speak Spanish I blend into white America.

But as a kid, other hispanic kids would tease me for being too white, and the white kids would tease me for being too Mexican

So I'm conflicted if this is a learned trait, or something from deep in our DNA

White (any country just white) - Absolute gods in Thailand.  Immigration staff will speak to you in a soft voice with smiles all around.  You will be surrounded by 5 members of staff trying to help you.  People will bend over backwards to help you.  Schools accept you and you will bypass all those silly health checks and police checks.

Black - Treated well.  Generally well treated and very popular with the ladies.

Chinese, korean, Japanese - Welcomed.  You will get an acceptable level of treatment.  Nothing special.

Indians, Arabs, Pakistanis - Absolute disgraceful treatment by Thai's.  You will be followed around the mall.  Random checks at the airports.  That elevator door will be closing in your face every time.  Awkward job interviews about that focus on your facial hair.  Parents will pull their kids away from you.
