President-elect Donald Trump said on Tuesday he will direct the Department of Justice to “vigorously pursue the death penalty” after President Joe Biden on Monday commuted the death sentences of 37 federal inmates to life in prison.

“As soon as I am inaugurated, I will direct the Justice Department to vigorously pursue the death penalty to protect American families and children from violent rapists, murderers, and monsters.

We will be a Nation of Law and Order again!” Trump wrote on Truth Social, echoing his long-standing advocacy for use of the death penalty, which was part of his tough-on-crime rhetoric during the 2024 campaign.

After Biden’s commutation of most federal death row inmates – which Trump on Truth Social said “makes no sense” – there will be just three individuals in federal prison facing the death penalty when the president-elect takes office in January.

Gee, Mr. Trump ... might I suggest you read Condorcet (influenced by both Voltaire and Rousseau who I also recommend you read for your enlightenment). He observed centuries ago that it is the surety of being caught more than the severity of punishment that results in fewer crimes being committed. Oops, sorry, I forget your goal is money and public notoriety rather than knowledge. Hmm, does this get me on Patel's "enemy list"?

d. Too many who are innocent are killed by the state. This is barbaric.

Agree. But when there is a video of Luigi actually committing the act, then there is only one sentence.

Ask him 'Is that you or not?'

No U.S. president can directly impose or mandate the use of the death penalty, as this decision is ultimately governed by the judicial system and must adhere to the Constitutional rights of individuals.

So just more blather.

Luigi knows it's he.

You try your best to show Trump in a bad way for these things. But face it. The men were not put to death and had gotten released from exoneration. They would not have been put to death either because it takes almost 20 years in prison before a death sentence is given. Plenty of time for them to be exonerated or to fight with appeals in the courts. So your nice little Trump rhetoric has no bearing to this OP.

So, you read it and completely misunderstood it. Well done.

Overwhelmingly, it seems.

Just as I predicted.

“Overwhelmingly”?

Trump won by one of the narrowest of margins since the 1980s.

Delusional or what!

Absolutely Bring it on and use it more often .

Don't leave those animals that do those Heinous crimes enjoy the privilege  of getting getting life and waiting for some pardon  that they might get.  Get Rid of them .

It's a shame the UK abolished the death penalty. There are plenty of a$#holes in UK prisons that are most certainly guilty of terrible crimes. Executing those would free up much needed prison accommodation.

They could start with Levi Bellfield and Colin Pitchfork. Then Ian Huntley and Steven Wright.

Questions for you:

1..If you are going to keep them on death row for 20 years before execution, what is the point of executing them at all?

2..Given he was found guilty of murder, would you be happy for Derek Chauvin to be executred?

PH

They must be given a chance to exhaust all legal recourse.. But if so many courts agree with the decision to kill him. He deserved it. It is not my nor the courts fault it takes so long. But it is a benefit for the convicted to have such time to try every option to have his sentence changed.

I would not support killing a murderer quickly to avoid the costs of the time in prison waiting execution.

So many pro-lifers support the death penalty, that’s always been a mystery to me. Apparently pro-life ends the moment you’re born and after that they don’t give a hoot anymore if you live or die. So mighty Christian of them….

Life sentence is cheaper than the death penalty.
