Reduced to Zero: I reduced my use of Masked-Swear-Words, w/in 1-hour, to zilch. You can too!

Featured Replies

Dear Fellow Sailors,

It's OK to be a sailor, as long as you don't write or talk like one.

In fact, a few weeks ago, I reduced my use of masked-swear-words...to zero, within a 1-hour period, and it proved easy enough.

Never again shall I resort to masked anything to communicate on TV.

Personally, I never used masked-swear-words until I saw others doing so.

Use of profanity is just one more example of ignorance, or the inability to use more descriptive words to enhance the clarity of one's comments and Topics.

I will not use these words, simply because I consider the use of same to be extremely low-class, similar to having one's skin covered in sailors' TATS.

i hope that my redemption will set a shining example for the rest of you.

Back in the day, when I once did a lot more writing, I never would have even considered use of such dirty words, as I see now in use almost everywhere in our decadent society.

Am I joking?

No, I am not joking.

I am serious.

I will never again use these off-color words.

Mark my Words!

Regards,

Gamma

I have duly marked your words and commend you for exhorting your fellow AseanNow members to follow your example.

This is really the only thing to do if one wishes to sound halfway intelligent.

Not me. I enjoy cursing up a f-ing storm every now and then, it therapeutic especially when I see f-ing halftarded psychopathic idiots driving on the roads trying to kill people or when I can’t reach a part in the engine compartment of a tiny Japanese car and f-ing get knuckle bit and bloodied. Other than an every now and then episode, I’m pretty calm and never curse around the wife.

If you were smarter, then you might choose to express yourself in this way, solely while showering by yourself in your bathroom.

Honestly speaking, I have always found cursing to be boring.

Often, the use of 4-letter words signals a sore deficiency in the ability to express oneself at a higher level.

Seemingly, the principal reason there seems to have been this recent veritable explosion of vulgarity during the past two decades is the quality of the contributors to the world's ever-more pervasive Social Media phenomenon.

What might you imagine the average IQ on Social Media might be, both for creators and for consumers?

One shudders to even hazard a guess.

But, the average surely must be lower than low.

Silly and immature rhetoric, you must have lived a very sheltered life, you discover a little sparkle and now you’re brilliant in your own delusion. A person's vernacular or what language they choose to use has nothing to do with an individual’s level of intelligence. Throughout my decades long career of research, meeting with hundreds upon hundreds of people from many backgrounds and education levels cursing was common place in business meetings with corporations and government agencies. Cursing is just an expression of an array of many punctuations. But it seems you have been hanging around the Church Lady as of late and are placing yourself in a conundrum of having a superiority complex.

Just curious.  What is a "masked-swear-word?"

Yes.

This just means:

My thinking is that they are both BORING and REPETITIVE, and lend nothing of benefit to the writing or the readers.

Maybe some might resort to masked swear words in order to circumvent rules in place on the forum.

Still, they are just boring and serve as a filler for lack of any other more descriptive words.

Basically, just symptomatic of very poor writing.

Better writers on TV never use them....

High class people swear a lot and have tattoos and not swearing without tattoos isn’t going make you a high class person. It might give you a false sense of being a better person but what exercise when no one is looking is what you really are.

I must agree with you, in this case.

Tricky-DICK swore by swearing.

We know this to be true just by listening to the White House Tapes.

Still, in case you are not as old as I....

One of the shocking revelations of the White House Tapes was the very fact that Nixon swore like a sailor, almost constantly.

And, as far as I know, so do Mafia Bosses, just judging by the late, great Soprano TV series.

Swear words are only words. It’s how the words are framed is what matters. Bomb could be just as offensive and worse. For example if someone said “that’s really bomb man super cool!” no offense right? But it would be quite different if they threatened with the device. Or “that’s effing cool man” no offense, but then a different story if they said “I’m going to eff you up!” Get the picture?

I swear man, I think I’m communicating with a child here, effing strange.

By the way:

Of course, I am no prude when it comes to profanity and swearing.

As you all know, I once posted Steven Pinker's wonderful and informative video "The Language of Swearing" here on TV.

Unfortunately, it may have been misinterpreted, and then removed by TV, and possibly with good reason.

I am a great fan of Steven Pinker.

You can watch Pinker's Language of Swearing just by going to YT, because I am not so stupid as to try to post the link, twice, on TV.

My only point is that repetitious use of Masked-Swear-Words serves no good purpose, when a very little of this goes a very long way.

Unfortunately, the use of Masked-Swear-Words has become overdone, probably driven by what people read on Social Media.

Monkey See and Monkey Do, and who wants to be a monkey, anyway?

If you get off on understanding the use of swearing, as do I, then please check out Pinker's video production.

Pinker is a graduate of McGill University.

And, I loved that school, too.

But even at McGill, I VERY rarely heard much swearing.

Swearing was an exception to the rule.

So, why is it that some TV contributors feel the need, when....

Students at McGill do not?

Listen to Pinker, and you will not be disappointed.

There is such a thing as STYLE.

Have you never heard of STYLE SHEETS?

Get over yourself, Gamma. Please don’t put your tat on others because you’ve had some sort of lame epiphany. This is a free-for-all online forum discussing everyday subjects concerning Thailand, we’re not here to offer up drab scientific papers or preludes to the King’s speech.

In the right context and when used sparingly, there can be no substitute for a properly placed swearword. To try to dance around with colourful ‘right’ language is just serving up word salad and makes one appear silly and full of themselves. Swearing has zero bearing on intelligence—the likes of Fry and Hitchens are/were experts at it. Only a trollish ego would think themself anywhere near these guys because they didn’t partake.

Whatever. Do what you wanna do, dude, just stop putting your sh*t (there you go) on others.
