Dear Fellow Gourmands,

Why is there no Costco here?

I once shopped and spent much at Costco, Taiwan.

So why no Costco here?

In the past, I enjoyed Costco meats and Costco cheese, while living in Taipei.

Would it be such a terrible thing to have a Costco in a few cities such as CM and BKK?  Would it?

So then, why no Costco here?

Anybody know?

This is not Africa or South America or the Soviet Union,....is it?

Therefore, do we not deserve a Costco nearby?

When one has a Costco, then one seldom goes.

But when one has no Costco, then, Lord knows,

We miss this retailer.

Would you shop at Costco?

And, if you did, then what would you buy?

I am not doing a marketing-survey or anything.

Just curious.

Regards,

Gamma

Or…

Do you disagree with me….

Again?

Costco is a good place to go if you're buying quantity. Affordability is why they're not here. Buying in bulk isn't cheap. In Texas, Costco is full all day long for that reason. It's cheaper to buy in bulk in the long run but bulk still has a higher price.

Sample of One:

a.  One person

b.  One table

The table I bought had little screws underneath. After a few packings away, one came out (lost) and the table became unstable. I was told by Fatima, a girl friend, - later to become my lover - that later versions of the table had more robust fittings.

I'm in no way doing COSTCO down. A friend bought a Christmas Tree in the Essex COSTCO and had many happy years with it.

We had a wholesaler in London called Food Giant. Did great mince pies. But the one in Cricklewood became a B&Q.

Overseas grocery retailers ,have already been here , and failed , likes of Tesco , Carrefour , Auchan (Spanish group 1

shop in Chang Mai), maybe others I forgot , but that's most likely why no Costco here....

Would love to have a COSTCO here in Thailand to shop , we have a branch near our home in Hokkaido which we go to about every 2 weeks , mainly to fill up the car with gasoline and kerosene for the heaters at home during these cold months. Favourite food shopping things we buy Kirkland brand Nut Butter , Salsa , Walnut & Fig Bread ,  Greek Yoghurt , Mixed Berries (Frozen)  etc.. and the 🌭 of course ..the only problem we have with COSTCO is struggling to fit all the food we buy into the fridge when we get home and eating it all before the expiry date ...😂

Cosco royally blows the dog's b*llocks. Only mingers and tossers of thee highest order shop there.

You've obviously never even entered a Costco or you wouldn't't be  making such a brain dead and asinine  statement.

You remind me of the saying about keeping your mouth shut  so that  others won't know how really ignorant you are.

Makro here in Thailand is a pale imitation of the values provided by Costco in the U.S.

May I put a finer point on that ...

Makro here is Thailand is a Chinese-Thai imitation of Costco.

And we have plenty of experience seeing where that leads.

("Chinese-Thai" means Thailand born, Thai name, Thai national ID, Thai language, but

Chinese thinking.)

So my answer to the OP question is this:

Costco management very likely watched as Carrefour and then Tesco-Lotus were sunk in Thailand.

Not wanting to put their precious capital at such a high risk, they are staying away.

Interesting that in comparison, the Philippines has a pair of local chain retailers there that expats there seem to like a lot and consider comparable to Costco -- the S&R and Landers Superstore chains.

In Philippines S&R is the only place I know of where you can get a decent selection of quality imported products.  Thats why it's popular with expats.  In other grocery stores you can't buy much eddible besides soy sauce, salt, cooking oil, ketchup, junk food and beer.

Thailand is completely different with well stocked grocery stores.

Did you take the table back and get your money refunded or have them replace the one you had?

No way the Tesco, Big C or Macros would ever allow it.

It would be nice to have a 'free market' here, but CP simply has to much influence & control.  How they were allowed to monopolies the food chain is almost criminal in a free market.

The dominance of conglomerates worldwide is the future, sadly.  When all the competing brands are made by the same company, your freedom of choice is an illusion.

Not far off from the movie 'Demolition Man'  where Taco Bell is the only restaurant chain :cheesy:

I am a member of Costco.  I shop at the Scottsdale Arizona store.  I've "heard" it is the largest liquor retailer in the USA.  Looking at the vast space filled with beer, wine and liquor I can believe it.  About 6 years ago they had one of my favorite scotch on sale.  Balvenie 14 year Caribbean Cask for I think $55.  I called a fellow friend who also appreciates the fine work our Scottish distillers put in and we paid a visit walking out with 10 bottles each.

Also a better deal on gasoline (petrol) and they sell a hot dog lunch or pizza slice for a loss.  You read that right.  They lose money on them.  Gets people in the store and man is it hard to not spend when in there.
