Is the harsh criticisms of Sir Keir Starmer fair and justified

Since assuming office as UK Prime Minister in July 2024, Sir Keir Starmer has faced several challenges and criticisms:

  1. Handling of Riots and Policing Concerns: Following a tragic stabbing incident in Southport, anti-immigration riots erupted. The government's stringent response, including the imprisonment of protesters for social media posts, led to accusations of "two-tier policing," suggesting unequal treatment based on background.

  2. Economic Policy Criticisms: Chancellor Rachel Reeves' budget introduced significant tax increases, including a £40 billion uplift and the removal of winter fuel payments for many pensioners. These measures have been unpopular, with experts warning of potential negative impacts on employment and public sentiment.

  3. Donations and Perceived Hypocrisy: Starmer has faced scrutiny for accepting substantial gifts and hospitality, totaling over £100,000 in five years. This has led to accusations of hypocrisy, given previous criticisms of similar behaviors by political opponents.

  4. Internal Government Challenges: Reports indicate internal chaos and a lack of clear direction within Starmer's administration, contributing to perceptions of an unsteady government.

  5. Declining Public Approval: Starmer's approval ratings have significantly declined, with some polls labeling him as one of the least popular Prime Ministers in recent history.

These issues have collectively contributed to a challenging start for Starmer's tenure as Prime Minister.

This isn't the complete picture.  There was also rioting by immigrants where the police basically walked away and let them get on with it.  Then, when non-immigrants rioted later, they were pretty firm with them.  You can't really remove the context of a recent riot that relates in some way.

Yes. The whole premise of his platform was that he was more honest, untouched by sleaze, straightforward, dependable, trustworthy, listened too and was in touch with the people...

He has proved to be the antithesis of all of those.

100%...  never have I been 'so anti' any British Politician before...    This guy may leave lasting damage....

There's a supermarket in the midlands somewhere without its manager...  and this is all this guy is good for - that he made it to PM astonishes me.. how a vote of no confidence has not yet been called is a bigger surprise.

I've never seen a more catastrophic fall in public support in my near 45 years of watching British politics. Setting aside the despicable riots etc I predicted that we were sailing close to IMF bailout territory again ( Healy, 1976 ).

I now see politicos saying that Reeves is being treated for depression as her budget was a disaster and the UK cost of borrowing is soaring.

The problem is that thousands of businesspeople are selling up and leaving the country with their capital. Who in their right mind would subject themselves to this Labour tax and pension policy when Dubai is offering tax free living.

Its up to a leader to pick wisely his own advisors and ditch them quickly if they're not up to the role. End of the day the buck stops with the leader.

Furthermore, and most egregious, he now appears to be placing limiting political damage from the fall out from the exposure of the Pakistani Child Rape Gangs cover up over the need for a proper inquiry into what is probably the biggest scandal in British post war history.

Then we should refrain from calling them leaders.

I think someone is scared to post, mashing buttons like a demented chimp is really grown up and highlights the level of intellectual capacity.

Not to mention giving away the Chagos Islands in the next few days. Hopefully Pres Trump will put pressure on to reverse this terrible blunder.

So you think it's OK for a country to forcibly evict people from their native homeland in order to pathetically hand it over to the US to build a military facility, and then over decades prevent these people from being allowed to return home? Do you even know the history of this saga or how unfairly and inhumanely these people have been treated?

If Starmer reverses this decision then it just cements the UK's position as America's lapdog. I hope he stands firm and does the correct moral - and legal - thing.

Don't worry. Reeves will save the day ... "Chancellor Rachel Reeves has defended her decision to travel to China to improve economic ties at a time when soaring government borrowing costs threaten to squeeze UK public finances. She says she wants a long-term relationship with China that is "squarely in our national interest" and on Saturday said agreements reached in Beijing would be worth £600m to the UK over the next five years ..."

Oooohh. A day's funding for the NHS (over 5 years). That will really turn the tide.

Is the harsh criticism of Starmer fair and justified?

There is absolutely no need to itemize the reasons why, they are many and varied, but mostly broken promises, coupled with him and Reeves having no understanding whatsoever regarding the economy and budget.

Yes it is fair, yes it is justified, the sooner he is gone, together with his cabinet, the better.

I have always advocated the rule of democracy, I have always followed and supported the will of the majority, feeling that if that is what the people want, I will do my best to make it work, but reserve my right to try and change other people’s minds.

In this case Starmer only has the support of 36% of the voting public, yet a massive majority in parliament, due to this he can pretty much do what he wants, as we have been witnessing.

Time for him to be replaced by someone who will represent the will of the people better.

Perhaps, more importantly, it is time for a change to a more representative make up of Parliament, where the amount of votes cast nationwide, equals the amount of seats each party wins in an election.

Absolutely, his conduct since he became PM is shameful and a utter disgrace. Glasses, suits etc being bought for him on his salary...

Not to mention the economy is now on life support, pensioners are being treated like they don't matter anymore, the country is being taxed to hell and back, the so called 'growth' agenda is dead.

Im not British, dont live there and only know what I read in (mostly) leftist news. My values do not accord with those of Mr. Starmer, based on what I have read, but thats not my business. My main interest in Blighty is their ability to assist us in developing and continuing and expanding the power of the English speaking world.

What happens over there up to you Sassenachs. I wish the non Yanks would be as circumspect where required.
