At approximately 11:45 on January 21, a collision involving two vehicles occurred on Phahonyothin Road near a U-turn in front of the Superman Ice Cream Factory, Talay Chupsorn, Lopburi. The crash left multiple people injured, prompting an emergency response from Narai Maharaj Hospital’s rescue team and volunteers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation.

 

At the scene, a black Nissan Navara pickup truck (license plate from Lopburi) was found with its front severely damaged. Retired Major General Wanchai Toyoprakan, 78, was trapped in the wreckage. Emergency responders provided first aid and transported him to Narai Maharaj Hospital.

 

The second vehicle, a bronze-gold Toyota Fortuner (license plate from Lopburi), was also heavily damaged. The driver, retired Lieutenant Booncherd Suwan, 64, was trapped in the vehicle alongside two passengers, Mrs. Supap Suwan, 62, and a two-year-old boy, Jarukit Suwan. All were rushed to Ananda Mahidol Hospital for treatment.

 

Eyewitness accounts and footage from local CCTV cameras revealed that the pickup truck, traveling inbound from Ananda Mahidol Hospital intersection, encountered a car attempting a U-turn at the location. The car executed the manoeuvre abruptly and failed to clear the lane, forcing Major General Wanchai to swerve into oncoming traffic. This resulted in a head-on collision with the Fortuner traveling from the Erawan intersection.

 

Police officers have documented the scene and a thorough investigation, including further interrogation of both parties and review of CCTV footage, is ongoing to ensure legal action is taken.

This is apparently very difficult in LOS.
This has been a big problem for many years, but the government seems to think otherwise.

Difficult because Government don't want to pay to build Roundabouts every so often, which would also have the effect of slowing down all the idiot speedsters !

In any Country where people are taught to drive properly we are taught never to swerve but to brake in a straight line, even if it means a collision with the offending Vehicle in front of you.  Much safer than causing this kind of carnage.

Apart from the cost, it has been repeatedly shown that Thais struggle greatly with the priority rules on roundabouts. I suspect this is due to driving indiscipline (as superbly demonstrated by the video of this crash) but you do also have some weird rule in Thailand about giving priority to those on the left. However I think indiscipline is the reason they simply can't (I mean absolutely can't) do roundabouts.

 

 

They could immediately improve the situation by allowing only one side to use the U turn instead of both....what am I thinking?.....they'd need tank traps to prevent them.

After watching the CCTV what the hell was the black Navara thinking about doing the speed he was doing approaching that U turn, no idea of driving to the conditions ahead.

Looking at the damage to the front ends of both vehicles it's a credit to modern vehicle technology that nobody was killed IMHO. That and airbags and seatbelts of course.

Give way to the right on a Roundabout or as the Thais call it " a Rotary "

[A driver must comply with traffic signals and signs which are installed at a circle (rotary). (1000B)

If there’s no traffic signal or sign installed at a circle (rotary), a driver must give way to vehicles coming from his right. (500B)

@NE1 That seems to be for fines. This is the one I was thinking about from the Thai Highway Code. It is potentially confusing.

 

Section 71 Driving past a junction or roundabout

 

 if two conveyances reach the junction at the same time and there
is no other conveyance at the junction, the driver shall let the conveyance driving on
his or her left side pass first; provided that at any junction where a main road
intersects a secondary road, the conveyance driving on the main road has the right

to pass first;

And induce multiple low-speed collisions by drivers who have no idea about the rules applying to traffic on roundabouts.🤭
