Bottle beers banned Koh Phangan

anyone have the details on why these bottles have been banned and replaced by tinned beers ?

still see some bottles for sale, was told we had another couple of weeks to buy, then a couple of weeks to stop selling 

anyone know the facts on this

need to stock up on bottles then, cos cans are awful

So closure of waste site then ? Wonder if this is the reason for the build up of rubbish all over the island now, unable to clear it fast enough

What's the point of banning bottled beers and using cans instead. It will still be the age old problem, instead of glass bottle litter it will now be cans littering the island.

Public and private cooperate in solving Koh Tao's waste problem. The shops on Koh Tao will replace bottled beer with aluminum-canned beer, starting from September 1, 2023.

Apart from the recycling benefit, cans do not shatter and leave broken pieces on the sand where they can cut your feet.

Then there are the professional scavengers.

These folk go through the bins etc and collect the cans to sell to the scrap people.

I had one pool guy who left because he could make more money scavenging - and flexible hours.

I hate canned beer but have to say since the introduction I’ve saved a considerable amount of money !

Aluminium cans – and plastic bottles – has a value for garbage-collectors and will be recycled, glass bottles don't have enough value.

If you fill the beer in to frozen beer glasses, you get another taste of the beer.

Bottles have larger volume and weight, while cans and plastic can be compressed.

Since it’s an island everything has to be transported there by ship or boat. Glass bottles are heavier than cans, therefore need more fuel to be transported, they also take up more space. When it comes to getting rid of them you can just crush the cans, melt them down and reuse the Aluminium. Obviously you can recycle glass bottles as well, so I don’t where the “can’t be recycled easily” BS in the article comes from. Also, most glass bottles are used multiple times before they get molten down and recycled. In that regard they’re actually a lot more environmentally friendly than Aluminium. But this is offset by the increased fuel consumption for transportation. In the end, it probably comes down to pretty much the same in terms of environmentally friendliness. 
 

Obviously anything out of a glass bottle will taste definitely better than out of a can. The best example is coke. That first sip out of a glass bottle is unbeatable!

If you mean glass bottled Coca Cola, you can buy them in Makro as .25-bottle and in many restaurants as .33 bottle – it's great for nostalgic moments – many Thais think that glass bottles keep the gas better; perhaps they are right...

Coke tastes the same wherever you go, as far as I know, unlike fanta.

They've taken sugar out of most cokes, 7 Eleven etc, but usually the street drink sellers use the original glass bottle Cokes.

 

Why don't people use a glass with their beer cans? would be fine

Once it’s been in a can, it’s been in a can and putting it in a glass afterwards to drink won’t make a difference anymore. At least in my experience.
