So, yesterday I arrived at tuk com too early so walked over Soi Bukhao for a breakfast. Something I never do, usually I have morning beers. I don't look at prices. Any how one small cup of instant coffee was 80 baht. I don't understand the business sense.  Why would you do that?

Many business practices here just make me shake my head. The way they mislead all the time when advertising product and price,(Lazada) buy one get one free, when in fact it just twice the price of one, as an example.

My best coffee place is in Huay Sak, on the road to Thoeng. 35 baht for a really good coffee.

 

80 baht for instant coffee is BS.

 

Was the OP dressed like a tourist?

Coffee prices can vary greatly from 35 baht a cup to 150 baht depending on the shop and the quality of coffee, instant, 3 in 1 or real brewed coffee beans. I am challenged with this everyday as I have a Cafe' so I hear all the good bad and indifferent comments on coffee quality and costs. Personally unless its brewed from beans its not really coffee and you shouldnt drink it.

Starbucks is 185 for a venti.

Well said.  80 baht for a decent cup of coffee is a great price.  I sometimes wonder if people think they're living in a 3rd world country!

In many ways Thailand still is (venture outside of the big city's/tourist spots and you'll see just how rundown the place is).

 

But Bangkok/Pattaya are definitely not 3rd world and the prices reflect that fact.

Affording isn't the point. I'm looking at it from a business perspective. A frequent visitor isn't likely to stop by for morning coffee. Now I suppose if you order the usual morning breakfast then the coffee is included. Even my Limo driver who was dining with me thought it was too high.

No, I was wearing expensive shorts and collar shirt with flip flops. My limo driver is always dressed nicely, one of my requirements.

Easier to go to 7/11.  3 in 1 coffee costs maybe 15 THB and the packages are usually enough for two cup-fulls of the small cups they provide.

I learned a long time ago from some fairly wealthy people:  You don't get wealthy by throwing your money away.  You get wealthy by making a lifetime of sound financial decisions.  It's not a matter of "can you afford it," it's "are you stupid enough to allow yourself to be ripped off," i.e., "A Fool And His Money Are Soon Parted."  Outside of the security zones in international airports where vendors literally have you by the cajones as far as extravagant prices, as long as their is a choice of vendors, I'm going to laugh in the face of the morons selling 15 THB worth of coffee for 80 THB and go find the affordable options.

Instant in 7 Eleven is 15 baht, that's about right. In Pattaya, say Benjamit or hut next to Nikom Court, ground coffee 60 baht.

 

I usually pay 40-60 baht out of town for good ground coffee

Could be they do it because some people (Farangs) don't bother to look at the prices, thus they are easy pickin's to be taken advantage of. I've had it happen to me as well.

This is Soi Bukhao. Many businesses survive on long term foreigners rather than 2 week millionaires. Having a pot of drip coffee ready at a good price would increase your customer base.

 

I make fresh ground drip coffee at home. This was just a one time deal. Road trips the old lady likes Amazon.

Sure, there are hovels in the rural areas around Chiang Rai.

 

Get off the beaten track, there are also properties and mansions which would fit into any wealthy enclave, in any country.
