A heated debate over equal healthcare rights for prisoners was abruptly halted in Thailand’s Senate yesterday. Senator Angkhana Neelapaijit withdrew her motion, which aimed to address disparities in medical treatment between prisoners and prominent figures, such as former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Thaksin's six-month stay in a VIP hospital ward, instead of prison, has sparked criticism over perceived justice system double standards.

Despite paying for his room, Thaksin's treatment stirred public debate over inequality. Angkhana cited insufficient evidence, especially regarding the death of activist Netiporn “Boong” Saneysangkhom, as the reason for her motion's withdrawal.

Senator Nantana Nantavaropas critiqued Angkhana's decision, suggesting political pressure might be involved. Despite the setback, Angkhana remains determined to highlight healthcare inequalities with stronger evidence.

The Senate voted 138 to 7 to withdraw the debate, with intentions to revisit the discussion once further evidence is collected, reported The Thaiger.

Who could imagine Thaksin siting in that prison cell... not a chance.

Money buys favours

Anybody who's lived here long enough knows that money is king and if you have it you can get away with anything including prison

Fancy someone citing political pressure in the Senate. If there can’t be pressure there, where is it allowed?

money talks and nothing else!...

I am surprised at the poor healthcare available. This is not to disparage the doctors and nurses who provide what they have. Prisoners need to have treatment available so that they can serve their sentences without it turning into a death sentence.

Also hard to imagine Yingluck in a cell and having her knuckles broken by a dyke warder's billy club.
