"Isaan" is not considered a separate language, but rather a dialect of the Thai language, specifically referring to the Northeastern Thai dialect spoken in the Isaan region of Thailand; it is closely related to the Lao language and is often considered a sub-grouping of it by native speakers and linguists outside of official Thai classifications.

Key points about Isaan:
  • Technically a dialect:
Within Thailand, Isaan is officially classified as a "Northeastern Thai" dialect.

  • Similar to Lao:
Due to historical migration patterns, Isaan shares significant similarities with the Lao language.

  • No official writing system:
While written using the Thai alphabet, Isaan does not have a distinct writing system dedicated solely to it.

  • Spoken in the Isaan region:
This dialect is primarily spoken in the northeastern region of Thailand.

Nice cut and paste, from an uncited source. Still incorrect. It's not referred to as "Isaan". That's the name if the region. There are many dialects in Isaan. Try going to Southern Isaan, especially the southern areas if Surin and Butiram, and tell the Khmer and Gui speakers their mother tongue is related to Lao language. Then go to Korat and ask them.  Keep the engine running just in case.

Torture? It's not difficult. A few words each day. Speaking to the locals each day. Conversational Thai aquired within 6 months. Easy.

If you live in Thailand, is really not that difficult. Immersion is always the best method.

It's not a case of needing it. It's a case of wanting to use it out of respect to the host nation.

Many complain about all those pesky immigrants in English speaking countries that get accused of not embracing the language and culture.

There are lots of non isolated places where knowledge of Thai helps leaps and bounds.

That's unfortunate for you. I guess some can do it but some can't.

Agreed. These guys just use bargirls though. They have no Thai friendships or respect for Thais.

My Thai GF said clearly they will not be effectual due to her Chiang Mai dialect

I tried to learn This I failed because my hearing is crap. Hard to pick things up. Yet my dog understands Thai and English. It like good cop bad cop. I nice in English wife tells her off on Thai. She prefers English. 😭

That was my intention when I moved here 14 years ago. I have tried and tried, but my age (62 when I moved here) makes it almost impossible to learn. What I learn one day is gone the next. I guess there is some age when language comes easy and some age when it is next to impossible. I really would like to speak thai!

If Thai was like a normal language without these stupid tones, ie French, German, I would have been proficient in it years ago.
