Try going to Southern Isaan, especially the southern areas if Surin and Butiram, and tell the Khmer and Gui speakers their mother tongue is related to Lao language. Then go to Korat and ask them.  Keep the engine running just in case.

Torture? It's not difficult. A few words each day. Speaking to the locals each day. Conversational Thai aquired within 6 months. Easy.

One of the hardest languages to lean due to the tones, gave up 15 years ago, and the Mrs teaches it!

If you live in Thailand, is really not that difficult. Immersion is always the best method.

It's not a case of needing it. It's a case of wanting to use it out of respect to the host nation.

 

Many complain about all those pesky immigrants in English speaking countries that get accused of not embracing the language and culture. 

 

There are lots of non isolated places where knowledge of Thai helps leaps and bounds.

Agreed. These guys just use bargirls though. They have no Thai friendships or respect for Thais. 

My Thai GF said clearly they will not be effectual due to her Chiang Mai dialect 

I tried to learn This I failed because my hearing is crap. Hard to pick things up. Yet my dog understands Thai and English. It like good cop bad cop. I nice in English wife tells her off on Thai. She prefers English. 😭

That was my intention when I moved here 14 years ago. I have tried and tried, but my age (62 when I moved here) makes it almost impossible to learn. What I learn one day is gone the next. I guess there is some age when language comes easy and some age when it is next to impossible. I really would like to speak thai!
