Has Thailand Long Surpassed the West in Terms of Quality of Life?

The most ridiculous news story I have ever seen in my life.

When Thailand was a dictatorship, it may be true that we Thais were quite wealthy, had large and magnificent houses and 4-5 cars parked in a row. But today, we are very poor. If you look at the big picture, Thailand has never experienced any crisis. So why is the economy in recession?

Thailand's three neighbors have disappeared since Covid, whether it's a depreciation of the currency, war or a decrease in tourists. Why have they survived until now?

This is the reason why most Thais are not interested in democracy.

I don't see large encampments of Thais sleeping in the streets of major cities because they can't afford rent.

No large encampments, but I walk by a dozen Thai homeless sleeping on storefront stoops on my 1 km walk from the MRT to my usual hotel.  That's at night and right on a main road. Half a dozen are sleeping there even during the day.  No telling how many are sleeping rough where they aren't visible from the road.  They usually have a pile of what I'd consider garbage that they've collected to scrounge through and either resell or recycle.

Not to mention the literally hundreds of beggars I pass getting in my 10,000 steps a day in Bangkok.

It's a case of pluses and minuses.

Our house in Thailand is without doubt better than our house in the US, although build quality and longevity might be questionable.

Health care, well my US healthcare is pretty comprehensive, whereas my Thai insurance after becoming ridiculously expensive dropped me.

I 'could rely on Government hospitals, but outside BKK go in to one them, you basically come out in a box, so I'll stick with my US hospital

Food is way cheaper in Thailand and is a real plus

Utilities, electricity are about the same, although my electric doesn't go off at the first clap of thunder as it does in Thailand

My internet little more expensive than I pay in Thailand, but a heck more reliable for slightly better service

Hmm and VPN, yeah you need that in Thailand because God forbid you utter anything that could get you in 112 trouble!

I'll tolerate the nonsense on Fox News not to have to worry about that!

How can healthcare be better when neighbors are getting healthcare and not paying billions in debt?

I have no idea what your question is. Please rewrite the post explaining what you are talking about.

Western countries are trillions, yes trillions in debt but continue to pay good pensions. Of course Thailand's much better value than back home.

Try telling a Thai earning a typical 10k to 20k bht salary Thailand has a better quality of life!

Quality of life is not measured in financial terms

The hospital budget is used to pay off debts for those who come for treatment but do not pay.

That quote is not from me. I don't post anything in Thai writing, which is against forum rules.

This forum is usually about OUR viewpoint, not that of a Thai peasant that will obviously not be happy with his income.

It was way better for me than where I am now, not in Thailand.

without any mobile phones, TV's, computers,......., internet, military equipment and......., guns,

I grew up without mobile phones, tv, computers, internet and we were happier people back then.

We'd be far better off without military and guns.

We sold our souls for all that <deleted> and we are unhappy for it.

Yes tech has ruined humans. Obesity, laziness. Towns are becoming clowns of each other.

Thailand will never catch up to the west in terms of economic/social development.

They can't even get democracy right!

Anyone who thinks that they will eventually be on par with the west in any, shape or form is dreaming..

bob.

Why the hell are you in Thailand then?

All that 1960 to 1980 music made people less happy. Tech the same.

A simple life makes people happy.

Most of the best music that's ever come out, especially Rock, R&B and Pop, came out from the 50's through the 80's, so I'm thinking music isn't your forte. Much of what we hear now came from those influences. Ask any major musician now who influenced them and they'll name names from those decades. Technology surely has people much happier, as new things are more easily accessed now than ever before. Simple life has people happy yes, but adding more entertainment increases it.

living here so long and being blind to what goes on

Not blind.

What goes on is the reason I chose Thailand to be my home, I love its many differences to the west, it's rough around the edges, similar to myself.

I'm getting fed up with people wanting Thailand to be like the west.

I don't want it to be the same s5it hole I left behind.

Yes, maybe you should curtail that activity, as it's getting old seeing you trash foreigners and acting the brown noser, living here so long and being blind to what goes on. Falling into a hole in the dark, which happens here, and sidewalks giving away, which also happens, is the fault of the maintenance department of roads. NYC is a huge major city and I never see or hear of roads crumbling like they do here. Maybe you haven't noticed that most of these mishaps are experienced by locals and not foreigners.

Locals are 70m, farangs are 400,000. That would be why.
