Ukraine is not a Country

Featured Replies

history of the Ukrainian people is complex and spans thousands of years. It includes various groups that have settled in the region now known as Ukraine. Around 700 BC, the Scythians, a semi-nomadic Iranic people from the Eurasian region known as Scythia, settled on the Ukrainian steppes.56 In the 3rd century AD, the Goths, a Germanic people originally from Scandinavia, began migrating towards Eastern Europe and settled in the area of modern Ukraine.5 The Goths were later displaced by the Huns around AD 370.5

Generally speaking, a country exists when it is recognised as a country by others. Ukraine is currently recognised by, and has diplomatic relations with 182 of the 193 member countries of the United Nations.

For me, that's a big enough consensus to say that Ukraine is indeed, a country.

Notable exceptions (that don't recognise Ukraine) are Russia, North Korea and Syria.

So if anyone wants to side with them then fine, that's your prerogative. I'll stick with the overwhelming majority of the world's countries that do believe Ukraine is a country.

Ukrainians have a different language and alphabet to Russia.

Anyone who Googles the Holodomor knows how tragic Ukraine's history is. It's the reason Ukrainians hate Russians. It was genocide, and the Russian apologists on here are beyond disgusting.

Both countries are Slavic. On that twisted logic, Slovakians should all be speaking Russian.

Pure BS, Ukrainians use Cyrillic alphabet as does Russia and some other countries. The language, although different, is similar to Russian, just like Polish and Czech are similar, or the Scandinavian languages. And no, Russians are not Slovaks, just a bunch of Tartars and Mongols.

To counteract the topic:

Is United States of America a country? It did not exist 250 years ago, it has no world history, and it was just created (just like Kuwait and Israel) by colonial powers raping and stealing the native lands.

I strongly agree that Ukraine is not a country. It should be called Soviet Republic of Ukraine Separatists that needs a strong tsar to restore order. Glad to see that the Z-ideas are discussed here.

While both Ukrainian and Russian use the Cyrillic alphabet, they are not identical. Here's a breakdown of the key differences:

Distinct Letters:

  • Ukrainian has letters that Russian lacks: Ґ ґ, Є є, І і, and Ї ї.
  • Russian has letters that Ukrainian lacks: Ё ё, Ъ ъ, Ы ы, and Э э.

Therefore, although they share many common Cyrillic letters, the Ukrainian and Russian alphabets have notable differences.

Ukraine was part of Poland for several centuries, particularly during the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth period. After the Union of Lublin in 1569, which united the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Ukrainian lands transitioned under Polish administration, becoming part of the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland.46

During the 14th century, parts of western Ukraine, such as Galicia, were annexed by Poland, while other regions were under the rule of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. By the mid-15th century, the greater part of the Ukrainian territories was detached from Lithuania and annexed directly to Poland

The United States was just those 13 colonies. So California, Texas, Louisiana, Florida and all the bits in between were never American? The Declaration of Independance was just an in-joke, joshing with King George. GThey didn't expect to be taken seriously.

But then, by the same token, Polish, German, French, the Scandinavian and many other languages that use what we call Latin alphabet, have some of their own letters added, to express local diphthongs and specific pronunciations... but you wouldn't know anything about that now, would you?

And, yes, I can read Cyrillic, but speak very basic Russian (mostly swear words). But listening to Ukrainian, I can hear that they share many of the same words.

Russians are indeed Slavs. They belong to the East Slavic group, which also includes Belarusians and Ukrainians. The Slavic languages, including Russian, are part of the Balto-Slavic branch of the Indo-European language family.14

The genetic studies confirm that Slavic speakers like Russians, Ukrainians, and Belarusians have similar genetic components.1 However, there are some differences in genetic makeup due to historical migrations and interactions with other ethnic groups. For instance, some samples of Novosibirsk residents and Old Believers in Siberia have 5-10% Central Siberian ancestry despite being genetically close to European Slavs.1

It's important to note that while Russians are Slavs, they have a distinct identity and history separate from other Slavic groups. Some Ukrainians, for example, have discourses that emphasize their distinctiveness from Russians, viewing the Russian language as a mixture of Finno-Ugric and Tatar languages with a small Slavic admixture.3 However, this perspective is not shared by all Ukrainians, and the relationship between Ukrainians and Russians remains complex.
