7-11 and Plastic bags...What about the Turtles and Global Warming?

Form the first day 7-11 opened in Thailand till 2020...Any purchase you made was automatically put into a plastic bag...

 

From 2020 to 2021 in 7-11........We absolutely can not give out plastic bag any more because we love Turtles and we are fighting Global Warming.....

 

From 2021 to 2022 in 7-11....We still love Turtles and we are still fighting Global Warming.......But if you beg and pay extra we might give you a plastic bag....

 

From 2022 to 2023 in 7-11.....We still love Turtles and we are still fighting Global Warming....But if you ask we will give you a plastic bag.....And heck about 50% of the time we will not charge you extra...

 

From 2023 to 2024 in 7-11......The whole issue of Turtles and Global Warming is up in the air.......But about 50% of the time we will give you a plastic bag without you asking..

 

From 2025 in 7-11.......We dont give a Rats-Azz about Turtles or Global Warming any more.... And we will automatically give you a plastic bag almost 100% of the time without you asking........Same as before..........lol

And for good measure we will throw in this plastic straw that you don't really need to drink that (plastic) bottle of water, some plastic spoons to eat your yogurt with and this plastic cutlery to go with your ultra processed, god awful prepacked meal. (presented in plastic of course)

I carry my own bag(s) in my knapsack, and I politely decline the straw.

 

You can blame 7/11, but it's all about personal responsibility.  (And being a cheap bastard that hates to pay for something that I'll soon have to bin)

 

What do you expect them to do?  Alienate and/or shame their customer base?  That's for snooty overpriced coffee shops that will go unnamed. (But they share a name with a Mellville character)

Covid-19 seemed to put the kybosh on the anti-plastic rhetoric...   Never have I seen so much single use plastic in use in my life... 

 

As far as plastic bags are concerned - its nothing more than a virtue-signalling an attack on the consumer....   everything (most things) is still packaged in plastic before it goes in our basket anyway... 

 

 

Now it seem - just stick a recyclable stamp on it and away we go.

 

Plastics are of course an issue, but we desperately still need them in specific areas... Where not essential is easy enough to get rid of them if 'authorities' really cared - its already been shown that the consumer will adapt.

I have vague memories as a kid with paper straws  they hardly lasted till the end of the drink  obviously technology has leaped and bounded and they now do actually last till the end of a drink (mostly)..whereas a plastic straw lasts for many drinks and maybe a school project after that and then back to oil again if there is the will.

 

Of course  people should not be be throwing the things in the rivers and sea that is down to education.

While I have been using the same plastic bag for at least five years, I still get surprised when anyone says that 7-Eleven gives free plastic bags away. 7-11 does not manufacture plastic bags. The plastic bags for 7-Eleven are manufactured by Naraipak, a major plastic bag producer in Thailand. So why do people think the bags are free? Because they don't notice the price is added to the goods that 7-Eleven sells.

Interestingly, when they went through a phase of not handing out bags, the price of their products did not go down accordingly.

It's not like they force their plastic bags on you though. You can easily take your own reusable bag to 7/11 and use that instead. That's what I've been doing since they made a (meek) attempt to get rid of plastic bags some years ago.

Yes the hard core plastic bag ban was for 7-8-9 months to a year.....

 

But it took many years of slow steps....  To get back to the old way. of automatically bagging every purchase almost 100% of the time....Like it is now again...

I am far more concerned with the excess packaging that comes from Lazada and Shopee. 

The other day I received an unlimited internet sim that came wrapped in bubble wrap in a cardboard box.

Everything these days, breakable or not,  comes in bubble wrap and a cardboard box.  

 

The problem is horrific on islands like phangan and Samui, where populations are growing and the superfluous garbage is piling up

,A few months ago they gave me - free - a rather sturdy canvas bag.

Easy to blame 7 for plastic.  Also very easy to fold up one of the plastic bags and stick it in your pocket so you don't need to add yet more garbage to the world.  

 

The same people complaining about all the trash on the beaches and streets are likely the same ones that are too lazy and "busy" to put a bag that takes up almost no space and weighs nothing in their pocket.

There seems to be something different about the plastic bags that 7-11 now provides its customers. The old ones seemed much thinner and for heavier things it was necessary to double-bag. The new ones are much sturdier and feel like they're made out of a different type or grade of plastic.

 

I normally just re-use a cloth bag that I got at Villa Market a long time ago.
