Did he seriously say that? Thai drivers think that if they made the beeping go away with an insert then that's the same as wearing the seatbelt in terms of safety? This is next level cargo-cult voodoo thinking .

No, they just  think seatbelts are an unnecessary nuisance that should be silenced.

Even now after years I still have problems getting Thai friends to belt up.

i did not cause the accident why should I stay ?

As someone directly involved in the accident you are unable to determine fault. This is why insurance companies say NEVER admit liability. That's for police/courts/insurance to sort. You are factually incapable of determining that and more than likely under shock, even in minor accidents.

But when 'beliefs' are factored in, then it starts to make sense.

All efforts by authorities to convince Thais to wear helmets, have failed..

Because those "in authority" hold the exact same beliefs.  Nobody's heart is really in it, its a completely different mindset to a westerner

These are wonderful devices. I only use them around town. Never on the highway, which would be asking for trouble.

Wut?

Not wearing a seatbelt, driving at night with no lights, and not using indicators, are all fuel-efficient practices that also make your battery last longer. :coffee1:

They save you a ton of fuel too. 🤪

How can they possibly not know that not wearing a seatbelt is more dangerous than wearing one???

It's the same deep, culturally-embedded tendency to possibly not know that not wearing a helmet while riding on a motorbike is more dangerous than wearing one.

What's worse is the deep, culturally-embedded tendency that causes many foreigners who claim Thailand as their home, to repeatedly get upset about such stuff.

If someone runs into me Iam fairly sure I know who is at fault.

Not that I'm getting upset about it, but how is that worse than people not wearing a helmet or seatbelt?  The former is just an opinion that might lead to a comment, while the latter leads to people literally dying.

Why don't you just use the seat belt for its intended purpose, which is to save your life in the event of an accident

Common-sense is lost on some, along with self-preservation, but there is a solution, natural selection eventually weeds out the riff-raff.

Come on now we all have to have a little bit of excitement in our lives. I'm curious as to why so many people were upset by my comment, live and let live right?

Seat belts and Airbags usually work together and if you do not use the seat belt the airbag might be disabled, If you do not use seat belt the airbag can actually worsen your injury in case of an accident. You move forward towards the airbag and the airbag detonate and throw you back.

Do not use those things they fool the cars safety system.

Indeed it does.

The farang demographic that has settled down here is aging dramatically.

You see them hobbling around on their canes everywhere.

Their constant complaining about life here and their supercilious attitude regarding Thais and Thailand won't be missed.

Hey, if I could convince my wife to leave Thailand, I would get on the first plane out and never return, I would also call in an airstrike to level Southeast Asia to the ground too, but that's another story.

Also, be careful about having your hands in front of the airbag when it goes off.
