Damaged UK Passport

 Back from UK 6 hours ago, put dirty shirts in washing machine. 60 minutes later the Mrs hand me a very clean passport from a shirt pocket.

What is the next procedure to get a new one, as some pages are damaged but still readable please? I am on non O, with retirement extension.

I did the same thing years ago....    (about 20)...  Maid hands me my passport the next morning, all wrinkly, visa stamps run, ID page visible... 

.... called up the British Consulate....    As long as the ID page is still clear, then its ok to apply for a replacement'.

 

Steps: 

- Book an Appointment at VFS 

- Download the forms and fill out for a replacement passport 

   (check box - replacement due to damage).

- Usual Process for Passport renewal 

 

If you have no urgency to travel, then its ok...     You'll keep your old passport.

When the new Passport arrives, head to your Immigration office and have the stamps transfered (most of their info is digital - so it shouldn't be an issue)

The corner gets 'snipped' only upon receipt of replacement / new passport. 

 

But... given the condition of his passport having gone through the wash, he can't travel on it anyway.

   Then you would be in Thailand illegally , with no valid I.D passport  .

Its also illegal for them to cut the corner off without your written permission .

   The corner gets cut off when you receive the new PP

Same here... VFS...      passports replaced in the last 6 months for both my son and I.

 

VFS only snip the Corner once you receive your replacement passport and verify its accuracy (DOB, Names etc).

 

The reason for this is your existing passport, while theoretically void while a new passport is under application is still valid as 'existing legal ID' in Thailand until it 'snipped' - it also acts as an emergency travel document.

 

Thus: I suspect you may have your wires crossed as to the 'stage' at which the staff at the VFS (The Shoppes at Belle Grand Rama 9) snipped the corner off your old passport, or someone there made a fundamental error - as you would have been left without 'legal identification'.

she did not ask for written permission
I had filled in an application for replacement renew
thats the only thing i signed the application for

Your posts are not clear.

 

OP, you have couple of good posts above. Here is a general thread covering UK passport renewal.

You need to establish if you are replacing damaged passport or simple pp renewal.

Should tell that to the US Embassy that requires you to mail in your old passport to the embassy in order to apply for a new passport. That leaves you without any passport at all for 3-6 weeks.

UK passport renewal also requires current pp to be sent with application.

Canadian the same.

Strangely AU passport renewal does not require existing pp to be part of application.

Did it last year and it's online apart from posting mail application to Oz embassy.

The countries I mentioned that require pp to be handed over need a wake up call.

Uk passport renewal does not need passport to be sent with application if you do it in person.

Staff at VFS will check your photocopies represent your passport, the copies sent with application and your passport handed back to you.

Someone reported a week ago that when you go to VFS they give you back the passport with the corner snipped while they process, you're saying that didn't happen and you keep your passport and take it back to VFS when you collect the passport for it to be snipped?

Did the same thing years ago ( CAD Passport ), filled out the 'Damaged passport' application form post damaged PP and all the required information to your Embassy or go in person. 16 days later my new PP was at the Embassy, In my case the damaged passport is not returned with the new. In the new PP is stamped "this passport replaces a valid damaged passport" with the previous PP number. Then to Thai Immigration to transfer Non O and extension details to new passport. Checking pockets is a good thing to do prior to laundry.......😄

That is what they did with mine, twice, snipped on collection of new, not on submission of application.

Can I post all my documents etc to VFS in Bangkok? As you say, for me it is a 10 hour round trip......twice if courier service is not available.

Form LS01 is also needed for lost or damaged passport.

Can I print the application form two-sided or 4 separate sheets?

Irrelevant, as UK Embassy is not involved in Passport Renewal.

I suspect in that case they would use an agent and I assume agent would return expiring passport together with new passport ( as he needs it for pick up ) and not return after the application is completed.

At the moment they are quoting 4 weeks for completion ( seen some claims it took 3 weeks recently ) so not too bad but I would have to think long and hard about giving up my passport for a long time, for example when it was 12 weeks a year or so ago !

No.  But you can send the documents to an agent, several in Bangkok and Pattaya, then they will submit the application.  But you will have to send your current passport to them as well as other documents.

Is Thai Visa express a reputable company please?

They charge Bht 12000 for the whole job, which is Bht 6000 for the actual passport plus their fee, which is cheaper than driving to Bangkok twice.

Yes.

BTW the first review is regarding renewal of passport. 

If I didn't live in Bangkok and needed UK pp renewal the obvious choice is Agent

Several threads with reports of using agent.

Zero issues. As per standard advice....always use well known company.

Only 1 copy of each and every passport page needed, whether it includes IMM visas and stamps or not. You also need to copy the first 2 and last 2 pages containing pure verbiage - plus, for good measure, the front and back covers. In particular, please note that colour copies of everything are insisted on by HMPO for some ridiculous reason.

 

People are constantly complaining on here about the amount of paperwork generated by IMM at extension of stay time, but the UK passport renewal process from Thailand really takes the biscuit in that regard IMHO!

This form is only needed for a lost or stolen passport, not a damaged one.

Get a new one, as you might find when you do your next 90 day, they will say get a new one because it's too badly damaged.

Two-sided is how I printed it a couple of years ago, with no adverse reaction from VFS or their HMPO masters back in the UK.

Hopefully not too off topic... 

I would be frustrated if I was UK. 

Not everyone lives in CM or Bangkok. 

So what then? Use Agent.. assume in that situation the pp and docs are mailed to agent eg in Bangkok and eventually new pp mailed back to you. 

 

By contrast AU renewal is all online + walk to post office to post to Oz embassy Bangkok. 

Basic page of existing pp and photos etc. 

Simple payment process. 

From day posted to receive via mail to condo 20 days. (2024) 

BTW: you don't send existing pp.

Went to Immigration today, and when she saw my Passport said Oh My God. 

Big boss said get new Passport and he will transfer all stamps.

The first 90 day report after a trip abroad must/should be done in person.
