Women using 'krap"

I've had several encounters speaking Thai with woman who use  'krap' instead of 'ka'.  These women were clearly not 'tomboys', and I got the impression that they would only do this with a foreigner not a Thai man.  What is the meaning of this?  Are the trying to be cute, or is it mockery?

It's to teach us how to say it, they do it with kids too.

I usually hear it from vendors after I've purchased something.  I'll say "Kop khun krap" and she will respond with "krap" instead of 'Ka"  What is she trying to teach in this situation?

It's just a habit they have with non-Thai speakers and with children, there isn't any explanation other than that, at least not to my knowledge. Don't overthink it :)

She's fed up with foreigners hitting on her, she does not want a relationship with a stinky old foreigner, she's letting you know.

It's definitely not mockery and I don't think they're trying to be cute. I think they're actually trying to be more respectful. In a way, they are talking to you as if they were another man on your own level by breaking down the gender barrier. Think of it as a woman in English saying "yes, sir." Anyway, don't overthink it. It happens to me sometimes too, and it never bothers me at all.

I have seen many videos of farangs speaking some Thai but instead of saying khrap they let it die halfway so that th listener hears "ka" only and then the listener will eiher ignore it or try to correct the male farang speaker.   Or maybe they really are only saying "ka".

Are you acting impolite or not paying her enough or a incorrect amount? Perhaps she has good reason to say "krap". Just sayin.

Only thing I can think of is they are correcting your pronunciation. Are you pronouncing 'krap' as 'crap' by any chance? ครับ is a high tone word, if your tone is off with this polite participle, might sound unpleasant to some listeners. If it's happening with multiple listeners, pronunciation is likely off. If you're convinced your pronunciation is fine, why don't you ask them why they're saying krap instead of ka.

and... IF you have spoken Thai, the its just a very simple habit the other person has evolved when speaking with a foreigner in an area of high tourist footfall. 

 

Consider it respectful - the kind of female vendor who speaks to a foreigner in such a manner is giving an example of the 'correct pronunciation', even if you have pronounced your Thai correctly - its just habit and shows good intentions - nothing more than that.

Yes, slight correction to my post: they also do it with foreigners who speak Thai, so it doesn't necessarily indicate one doesn't speak Thai well.
