First causalities of Trump's trade war begin to emerge: JLR halts US car exports

Featured Replies

Jaguar Land Rover HALTS US car exports just hours after Donald Trump's trade war kicks in

Already on shaky financial footing, "JLR suspends vehicle shipments to the US after Trump's 25% tariff on car imports, placing 9000 British jobs at risk as Solihull braces for economic fallout".

"Exports to the US account for almost a quarter of those sales and JLR is at the centre of Britain’s car industry, accounting for £1 in every £8 of the country’s exports."

"The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) thinktank has said more than 25,000 direct jobs in the car manufacturing industry could be at risk as exports to the US are predicted to fall."

  • So less competition for US car makers?   Another win for Trump!

If this is your idea of victory, them why shouldn't Trump increase tariffs to 100%?  A lot more competitors to us companies would drop out. He's just a big wuss.

  • No loss there, what a POS auto maker.  Brother, a motorhead, had a Jag in days past, and said it was worst car he ever owned.   Seems they haven't improved much ...

Companies are putting a hold on any investments. The US government with one hand says the tariffs are permanent, and then says thy are up for negotiation. Meanwhile, to establish a new car factory takes 7 years.

In the case of JLR, they have 3 months of inventory inside of the US.. 400,000 Americans love them, and buy them. And even with a price rise, hundreds of thousands will continue to buy them. They've not pulled out of the US market, just reconsidering how they will be sold, liely moving ore to ordering on demand, rather than tying up so much inventory. Its highly likely the tariffs will be dopped. The supply chain is complex, with some of the cars originating in the UK, others in the EU. The suspension will cause slow downs and stoppages among JLR's US supply chain (Americans will lose their jobs), and will likely impact Waymo.

You muppets don't understand how these tariffs will be applied, given the variation in rates that also apply to spare parts and assemblies. Its not just 10% added to a Range Rover. But it might be 20% added to the windshield. 0%. If you are looking at the I-Pace, the battery is zero rated because its American. etc

The Range Rover has no serious US branded competitor. American SUVs like Suburbans are truely POS; its competing against other imports and that transplant import. <deleted> luxury cars are generally vile things designed for old people with bad hips. The Vice President's Indian wife is probably disappointed.

My Jaguar XJ8 has been impeccible in its service with me, as was the XJS I had previously. It depends on the competance of the technicians who look after it. Your brother was probably an idiot who brought a lemon and then paid Cleetus the pool boy to service it.

French wine also on hold, because the 47th President wants French wine to be made in the US

No Infiniti QX50 for the Gringos. They'll whine like babies over that.

The Chinese car brand? Looks good - and with a few notable exceptions certainly preferable to almost every car ever made in the US.

BTW, Trump Chi in Mandarin means "Trump is a clown".

Depends on which one. I like my 1988 F-150 4x4 with 370K miles.

I hope you are wearing a parachute for that leap of logic.

I used to take my MGB in for service to a dealer that also sold Jags.  Without fail, it seemed like every time I was there the service bays were filled with XKEs.That must have been a regular occurrence for the owners.

And so very true Cameroni. But no one is buying Jaguars anymore since they went Woke and announced they will only manufacture electric vehicles. The very British MG is now owned by a Chinese company so no reason to buy that car either. The Brits will capitulate very soon and bargain with the author of "The art of the Deal," Trump. President Trump just keeps on winning and winning. MAGA

Actually, cars and automotive parts are all subject to a 25% tariff, independently from where they are manufactured, including therefore those made in UK.

Exceptions are, for the time being, vehicles assembled in Mexico and Canada.

It’s just protectionism stifling competition more ways for the big automakers to keep prices up and kill innovation.who wouldn't buy a Toyota champ here in the states for a work truck for 12k?? Anyone??just more welfare for the big auto companies.heck I’d love to see a city ace mint diesel available here in the states.btw agree the jags were a money pit sexy though
