Thailand to Boost US Imports Amid Tariff Turmoil

The US could have been part of that free trade agreement.  All the countries in that trans pacific trade agreement tried to convince the US to join it.   Trump in his first term rejected it and didn't want free trade.

Trump doesn't really know what he wants.  He changes his mind from day to day, often contradicting himself.

  • How does the government import more without a higher budget? American products are expensive. Which agricultural goods does Thailand need from America? Sounds like coals to Newcastle.

  • Smarter countries are just dropping their tariffs against the US. Thailand will negotiate their way into a worse position

  • Anyone with half a brain can work out the obvious action to take: (1) reduce Thai tariffs on US imports down to a sensible level (eg 10%), then (2) negotiate with Uncle Donald to reduce the US tariffs

Not really.  The reason for Trump's tariffs had nothing to do with import taxes.

The tariffs are entirely based on the trade deficit.  Even if Thailand had zero import taxes on the US, there would still be a huge trade deficit, so still huge tariffs on Thailand.

There is no quick and sure way to end trade deficits.  Tariffs actually compound the problem by artificially inflating prices.

People as uneducated as you shouldn't be allowed to post on here. The US consumes 30% of all goods in the world.

Thailand should just drop the import tax as some things x3 instead of buying planes etc but maybe that’s too logical for them!

But dropping tariffs is the logical thing.  Logic is a foreign concept to Thai

Thanks, now we know why the majority of them are obese

USA many not be a big trading partner like China, yet Thailand imports quiet a bit of commodities .  US can play a significant role to further change Thailand into an industrial economy.  However, the total import cost ( Tariffs, Taxes, fees and other expenses added to the cost of a products) is significantly higher and Thailand had a free roll so far.  Negotiating with USA is a good deal for Thailand.  However, Thailand should look into their overvaluation of their currency.  It will make farangs happy in the long term.

Tariff's will raise prices and it will still be Biden's fault somehow.

She doesn't understand that what Trump wants is that you lower your tax for USA imports, not to chit chat, buy more F35s... 72% was always tooo high

Hold on..i think i read yesterday that the income from casinos will match the money higher tariffs doing to ur economy.

"increased 'energy' acquisitions"? Like what? Nuclear energy? Am I missing something else?

Could have bought F16s. That would have helped.

The majority are not obese. The closest you are to being correct is if you break it down in terms of race. Almost but not quite 50 percent of American blacks are obese. They are followed by hispanics, whites, and then asians.

If you say so. Yes strictly not the majority, but maybe they missed a few

t's estimated that a little over 42% of American adults have obesity, while about 30.7% are overweight. Overall, more than two-thirds of U.S. adults in the United States are overweight or have obesity. Adults between ages of 40 and 59 are more likely to have obesity.

In fact, more than 44%Trusted Source of adults between these ages have obesity.

Absolutely true, but the one thing he has always been fairly consistent about is he hates free trade and loves tariffs.  His goal here is to bring manufacturing back to the US and eliminate the trade deficit.

Not true at all.  He just doesn't like getting bent over the table like our so called trade negotiators since the end of WW2.

Americans have been taking it in the shorts on unfair trade agreements, for decades.  That stops here.

Hmmm, Google AI seems to be following the White House's line.

I just searched "tariffs on US cars in Thailand: and got the following.

"Interesting" that the back of a fag packet 72% tariffs are now being stated as fact.

"AI Overview Thailand faces potential economic impact from US tariffs on automobiles and auto parts, including a 25% tariff on automobiles and components, as well as a 36% tariff on Thai imports due to Thailand's 72% tariff on US goods. "

well just a short period ago they had a choice between approved govt contracts for either Swedish planes or f16's from the US for the Thai AF.  hindsight helps of course though the Thais don't reall need either IMHO.  After all who would attack Thailand except tourists anyway?

Thai-Airways International ordered 30 Boeing Airplanes, beeing delivered from 2027 on.

How to pay them, with high rising import tariffs?

John Deere tractors are manufactured in more than 30 countries, but the majority are made in the U.S.

That’s exactly what the new external revenue system will be monitoring and policing. The Trump administration has been very clear on this - no cheating. FAFO.

AI is usually wrong.  I never use it.

The Einsteins working for Trump used AI to get their list of countries with a trade deficit to the US.  The AI list mistakenly included the uninhabited Heard and McDonald islands.  Thats how Trump ended up taxing penguins.

This feature of the tariffs was explained the other day. According to a Trump spokesman, they were trying to avoid the possibility anywhere on the globe that China especially could engage in a transshipment loophole. So they tariffed everywhere. I don't know how legitimate the argument is, but at least it was an intentional policy decision.

As I am not knowingly buying anything made in America, I don't care.

The US has no idea of the backlash it is getting.

Starbucks, MacDonald's, KFC, Ford, GM all have better quality and cost alternatives. Tesla sales have fallen off a cliff.

Not true at all.  He implemented tariffs to prevent some countries that would abuse the zero tariff zones and trans ship goods through those islands to avoid paying any tariffs.

You have fallen for the orange lunatic's lie that the tariff rate Thailand charges the US is 72%.  They have now admitted that is false, and the tariffs Trump is imposing have nothing to do with the tariff rate Thailand charges the US.

Indeed, there was some statistics quoted in Thai media that the actual average tariff rate that Thailand charges on US goods is just 9%. It does not leave much room for negotiation. However, for example, for wine they have many different fees and additional taxes that are applied on top of the the initial tariff. It might mean that the actual average tariff rate is much higher.
