I always like the fact that if I called a USofA bank or government entity from Thailand on my PC via SKYPE the caller ID they would see would be my US SKYPE number.

How did we find information about things? Use a bloody big encyclpedia.

A bloody big encyclpedia (That I know off) had the international phone numbers for banks or government organistations that I may need to call whilst abroad, I got them before leaving.

People used to go to those phone booths/shops, there was one at the bottom of Soi Honey

I use magicjack.  if you are calling to the usa or canada, it works.  I have used magicjack for over 15 years.  occasionally, they have sales where you can get 5 years for 150 usa dollars.  that is what I do.  I keep 2 separate phone numbers active.  one with area code in california and one with area code in nevada.  I use the one in california all the time for contacting banks and other financial institutions I have connections to in the usa.  I keep the one in nevada active even though I don't use it because I plan to live in nevada when I return to the usa someday.  having 2 magicjack accounts also allows me to test connections using 2 phones.  just google magicjack for the website.  if you sign up, they will send you a toggle device that you can use when you want to call using magicjack.  but I don't use that toggle device anymore. I just install their magicjack android app on my phones that you gain access to when you sign up and pay for their service.  you cannot access the android app on google playstore.

They sure did but now Skype is shutting down............ ZOMG, THE WORLD IS IMPLODING.

This maybe explains why soon ex-SKYPE:

I used SKYPE for 20+ years even before moving to Thailand. But a NY Times article said that SKYPE has gone from 300 million users in 2016 to 36 million users in 2023.

TEAMS has now has 320 million users per the article. (note all paid TEAMS phone-type accounts are business accounts)

With certain VoIP services, you can choose which number is shown when you call. But you do need to register a USA number in the first place. Though it doesn't matter if you don't maintain the SIM. Once the number is in the system, you can continue to use it.

I was a regular user of Skype, so I searched for an alternative and now I use Mytello. So far 3 long distance calls have worked fine and the cost has been equal to Skype or even cheaper.

MyTello does not offer an unlimited calls / minutes subscription.  Fine for the casual user, not so great for the frequent user.
