Uk passport only 3 months left

Featured Replies

Planning a trip to the UK end of June
Just noticed my son who has dual nationality is going to have an expired UK passport in October
Will he be able to leave Thailand on his Thai pp and enter the UK with his soon to expire UK pp?

Really don't want the hassle of going to Bangkok if i can help it.
I have looked and it says you need at least 6 months before expiry but also see other people say as long as its not expired you can enter the UK without any problems and we are only going for 2-3 weeks

Err on the side of caution and get a new passport ASSP. Why mess around? You know you have to have one. It's probably easier to sort it out hear than in the UK.

Yes thanks but this can be done on return when we have more time if it is not needed now.
No point in having to make a special trip 6 hours each way to Bangkok if from what i have read people say you don't need to do it
Might stay for a few days on our return in Bangkok which would be easier than doing it just before we go and get the Passport delayed

As a UK citizen he will have no issues returning to the UK.  He could do so even if his passport had expired.  Get it renewed while you're in the UK.

No need for this at all.....

He's Thai / British

He will depart Thailand on his Thai Passport.

He will enter the UK on his UK Passport which will have 4 months remaining validity.

As a discussion - this is a non-starter, absolutely nothing to worry about entering the UK even if he had an expired passport.

With UK Passport Renewal - you can apply online - it 'should' take 3 weeks (but it seems you wont have time for that).

https://www.gov.uk/apply-renew-passport

Ideally, you can use the Fast Track Service.

https://www.gov.uk/get-a-passport-urgently

Fast track appointment for a child is 1 week (£145)

The earliest you can get an appointment is the next day after you apply.

Your new passport will be delivered to you by courier 1 week after your appointment.

Note: there is no 1 day fast track for Childs Passport renewals (there is for adults).

Many thanks again for this info
We can renew on our return which will save time/stress

As BB has pointed out there is no problem entering the UK using a passport with limited validity or even an expired passport, your son is a British Citizen so not subject to UK Immigration Controls, his passport may be close to expiry but not his citizenship.

I personally would renew his passport whilst in the UK, though it depends how long you are there for.

I note the post regarding leaving Thailand using his Thai Passport, but keep in mind that he should leave Thailand using the passport he entered on.

Apparently, UK Passport Office staff are now going to be redeployed to handle Asylum applications - speculation is that it could lead to delays in issuing new passports to UK citizens. May or may not have an effect but I would not take a chance and would apply immediately!

Renewing the passport in UK is easy. I applied on line on the 1st May, sent off the old passport the next day. Received the new passport on the 6th May and the old passport the next day. Had the passport photos taken at a shop, given a code to use on the application. E mails from the passport office telling of progress of application.

The price is going up soon.

Yes.  Much easier to do if you're in the UK.

One can enter the UK with an expired UK passport but if you will be spending any time near London you can apply on line Gov.UK website for a new passport and arrange to collect it at an appointed date and time from HM Passport Office which is minutes from Custom House Station on the Elizabeth Line by the Excel Centre…

Do not risk having it couriered - pay a little more to collect it in person from HM Passport Office

No problem entering the UK.

One thing nobody has mentioned... If you're on a non-direct flight double-check the rules of any place you're transiting through.

(You're probably fine to transit with the Thai passport, but it might mean a stopover isn't allowed.)

Remember not to apply before you land in the UK. You don't want the passport flagged in the computer system as surrendered when you're checking in.
