I've looked for a sympathetic post, but in vain. He doesn't seem very popular.

He would have been better holding a handrail on one side with someone on the other.

Those steps look OK but Thais seem to be not that good at steps. That's sometimes because they lean towards lucky numbers of steps rather than practicality.

On slippery  "marble" steps. His fall was textbook elderly slip and fall. He was fortunate not to break a wrist or arm. He will be sore for weeks and may have trouble walking for some time.

Walking without shoes is a problem if you don't take your socks off. Walking with socks on is like walking with leather sole shoes on ice. I almost broke my back walking down the stairs with socks on. I was lucky, but from then on  it's either barefoot or shoes on for me.
