I recently received a speeding fine from a speed camera. The car I was driving is owned by my wife. I paid the fine at local Post Office however they didn’t want my licence number and said not required. Will my wife be liable as she does not have a licence.

Liable for what?  You've already paid it.

I presume you don't need a licence to own a car, just drive it. But isn't it time she got one. What happens if she needs to drive in an emergency.

What has the postal office to do with your driving license number?

The letter/ticket has a file number and thats it.

Your name is not involved.

(or do you find it anywhere?)

Zero consequence for your wife.

 

No one bothers about an ordinary speed ticket and seemingly many still ignore and don't pay.

Whether this still works without consequence is disputed.

 

Just pay the fine. That's all they want.

Apparently the camera fines are no longer legally binding due to a recent court ruling. I only heard this from someone and have not verified it   

No consequences for your wife.  Some of our cars are registered in my name, some to my wife - but I pay all of the fines.  I have never been required to show my drivers licence - only my id.  (pink card or passport).   AFAIK the 'points scheme' has not been instituted here in Thailand - it is only about making a little bit of money.

But seriously, 500 Baht is not much of a deterrent.

Quite a bit more than a day's wage, for the common folks.   Why I don't see a lot of 'made in TH' entry level car passing my on the highway.   Mostly the higher end vehicles.

In my area , I am frequently overtaken by 30 year old corollas held together by duct tape, bog & the power of the amulet! - and of course delivery vans and fortuners...

Don't worry, be happy. Fine paid, keep the receipt and that's it. Owning a vehicle does not implicate mandatory driving licensing; see all those commercial courier companies. 

In the past, yes, when you bought a car you were also automatically supplied with a lifelong driving license; some non-receiped outlays secured that document. Back in the day you would see much more often cars with red (temporary) car plates smashed up a pole, tree or anything else by - most likely - one of those lucky recipients of a gifted driving license 😉 

Just a thought but I wonder if the speed camera was correctly set up, position and direction wise? I say this a someone I worked with many years ago received a ticket in the UK for speeding. He took it court and showed that the camera in the way it was set up was ready between 5 and 7 mph higher than the actual value. He was incidentally the MOD authority of radio system but just pointing a camera without taking into account the surrounds can lead to erroneous results.

Most "made in TH" vehicles are limited to 180km/h.

I'm only doing 90 kph most times, if that.  Remember my Vios & Mazda 2, and would cruise OK at 100+.   But I slowed down when all the cameras came out, and they started a point system.

 

Although all the speeding tickets I got, only one had the wife's name & DL # on it.  Every speeding ticket was a scam, as stated way faster than I would ever drive, as in 110-121 kph.   Two were 121 kph  

 

Nah ... do 120 in either of those cars, and you definitely know it.  Cheaper to simply pay than fight.

 

If I had known at the time, most don't pay, I would have done the same.
