Last night I was sitting out on the patio around 9pm, and a firefly flew past me.

I thought, wonder if there's any in the field behind my home, so I went upstairs to look out the back windows, and the field was full of them, must have been over 30 and maybe as many as 100 flying around, blinking and flashing. This is the most I've ever seen by far, normally only 2 or 3. It was an amazing sight to see!

Just went out to watch them again, there were even more tonight, they've even spread to the front garden. It's an amazing show, pitch black with flashing everywhere and a buffalo bellowing in the distance.

Only 100?  Has the world firefly population suffered a serious decline?

 

I can remember as a kid going out and catching the things in a jar.  I forget why we were doing that, other than for fun.  There must have been thousands of the them, flying around.  Maybe more than that.  Millions?  

 

I'll have to look it up.  But if you only see 100, that's crazy.  

Lucky you. I haven't noticed any at my house. Mind you, I wasn't really looking. I'll go look tonight.

 

There's a village outside of BKK which has millions of them. You can take a small boat down a canal and you'll see hundreds of trees, each lit up by tens of thousands of these bugs. And all blinking in unison like xmas tress lights. It's quite a sight to see.

Yes, last year same time around I haven't seen any or only a few.

But this year a lot.

My other half took me to see fireflies at an army base.  It was a good visit.  From memory, the fireflies were most active straight after dusk, and the numbers observed diminished as the evening went on.

They're wonderful aren't they?

 

I would see them regularly in the past at the start of the wet season, but not for a few years now. The same with the butterflies. Hopefully they will return. I did see a host of butterflies yesterday when the sun came out so here's hoping.

 

 

 

 

 

In our village, rarely see them at our house. Down on the farm, used to see quite a few, but since everyone installed loads of solar powered security lights, they have gone.
