Many hotels are quite keen to see your passport, and it would not take much effort to check if a guest is on overstay. I have often suspected there would be a few baht in it for the hotel staff to report such a guest.

I agree, BUT the farang will lose face. lol Police come, everyone takes pictures, everyone talks, farang dragged out....pointed at, arrested, nobody says overstay so nobody knows...

visitors stop coming.

as crazy as my answer is, I can see the police note the farang's presence and maybe arrest him once off hotel property.

seems like we would see these stories.....we don't.  so......

Nothing that a pair of sunglasses a hat and a Chinese snot virus mask can’t fix.

While this bold move has generated excitement and support from many quarters, it's not without its critics. In his bluntly titled open letter, “Dear Sir,” Alan French, a long-time foreign visitor, raised concerns that the emphasis on high-tech policing and large-scale public events is overshadowing the city’s core needs. He accused the mayor of focusing excessively on spectacle—such as firework festivals and themed parades—rather than addressing essential aspects like infrastructure and the overall quality of life for everyday residents.

Absolutely spot on!

upscale department store. Her wallet

not all crimes are the same.  I think this one would go up the ladder much faster.  upscale, check.. money involved, check...

I do think we all agree the system CAN work, but .......  once I met a very angry couple, money stolen, video proved it was the cleaning staff, she fled back to Myanmar, many trips to police station, they still left very upset.  hotel didn't get in trouble.  who knows what really happened.   gotta get that money back before it's spent.  lol

Well an employee would not see the benefit of that....! The police make use of a lot of informers, and I doubt they do it for free.

It could be worth 20,000 baht.

Wheres the 20k baht from? That's the current max fine, you think the IO is handing it all over? If they lifted the max limit on the fine then it might make sense

They read too much and develop phantasies about the total control by the Chinese totalitarian regime.

Zillions of cameras, face detection etc. etc.

I really wouldn't worry, aside from the fact that I live (totally legally) at the other end of the country. The much vaunted BMW smart camera cars didn't really work, I believe that our local one broke down (cam belt?) after 6 months and has been gathering dust at the back of a police station since then. Any way, face recognition? We all look the same!

I suspect a person looking at a deportation, detention plus a 20 k fine and 5 year blacklist could pay more. Why are you being obtuse, a  thousand baht to a hotel worker  is what might be needed?

The 60-year-old, who has not been identified, entered the kingdom in early 2000 on a tourist visa and never left, evading previous police checks by claiming to be in the process of extending his visa.

He was finally caught in the northern province of Chiang Mai on Monday during a crackdown by immigration officials on overstaying foreigners -- more than 9,000 days after arriving on a 30-day visa.

Like traffic cameras the films will not be looked at or the excuse will be no money to process the images!

Traffic cams are digital... no film.

The article doesn't clarify if armaments will be attached to the drones for the 'hunt'.

Maybe the drones are spotters for the armed robot dogs.

What happened to the expensive BMW "Smart Car" campaign from 2020? it was  introduced with great fanfare and promoted as a solution. The vehicles were described as having inbuilt alerts and tracking systems as well a live connection to database-driven information linked to the country’s biometric system. One of the vehicles  was involved in the apprehension of a 57-year-old disabled man from Belgium using a walking frame for mobility near Burapha University Hospital. In another takedown, a 54-year old Sudanese national walking on a Pattaya sidewalk was stopped. And a 63-year old Australian the authorities called the  ‘hiding kangaroo’  was identified as he walked on the side the road. Is this what is in store for Pattaya?

They are still around... I see them often on the M7 traveling between BKK and PTY.

What if I, blatantly breaking the law, get up to no good with a cheeky barmaid—while that drone hovers in front of the bar, filming everything (totally for other reasons, of course)? Just the thought has me popping two blue pills like it’s happy hour!

Do the drones also film?

Then there would be more video footage of street crime.

Eventually, with drones everywhere, street crime should be significantly reduced.

They have to develop the film first...

One wonders if the companies awarded these hi-tec razzamatazz contracts show their appreciation to those who awarded them? Like a nice bouquet or a jar of chicken essence.                                     The nice new flashing sign at the entrance to Walking Street should make it safe from the drunkards bent on causing havoc and giving Pattaya's reputation as a family destination a bad name. How much did it cost again?

Eye in the sky can spot ongoing crimes outdoor. But how they can identify overstating aliens?  Their uav linked to the record of each one's arrival date and face photos? After recent switching to digital arrival card, do they still photograph the entrants?

Anyone who recently came in/came back to this kingdom, please comment.

It's not obtuse, it's plain, simple logic, is it worth an employee risking their employment by looking out for their employer's interest over 1k baht for themselves? And if the person is only a few days over then it's not even worth the IO offering the reward....

In a clarifying statement, Pattaya officials note that only observation drones, bomber drones, and kamikaze drones will be used.

Flame thrower drones will not be used due to the hazards inherent in fire.

Read Thaiger and Pattaya Mail story and no mention of cost.

Maybe get the Police to actually do some effective Patrolling and not hide behind a video screen remote operating a drone.

Seriously if they can't see the thousands of Thais not wearing helmets but catch the Foreigners how can you expect them

to use this effectively.  Sorry to say but unless someone in Authority is putting pressure on the Boys in Brown to execute than

it will be a new tech gadget to play with that will probably be crashed, blown away in the wind, or broken and take a long time

to repair.
