This international contemporary art festival, announced at a recent event held at the Royal Phuket City Hotel, promises to elevate Thai creativity to new heights on the global stage and position Phuket as a beacon for sustainable cultural tourism. Presiding over the launch, Prasop Riangngen, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, emphasised the multifaceted goals of the Biennale. "This event is not solely about showcasing art; it is a strategic initiative to leverage cultural capital to boost the economy, inspire our youth, and forge international connections," he stated. Scheduled to run from November 2025 until April 2026, the Thailand Biennale, Phuket 2025 will feature the artistic contributions of 65 creators, both local and international. With 56 artists already confirmed, organisers aim to finalise the roster by adding nine more participants, including promising talents from Southern Thailand. The Biennale will highlight cross-cultural collaboration, with artists crafting site-specific installations that explore themes such as sustainability, the interplay between humanity and nature, and the philosophical balance between permanence and change. The guiding concept of "Eternal Kalpa" captures the timeless and transformative essence of art in a rapidly changing world. Exhibits are set to grace all three districts of Phuket, with 13 specially curated pavilions spotlighting work from leading Thai and global cultural institutions. The event's launch drew significant attendance from cultural luminaries, including OCAC’s Acting Director Kesorn Kamnerdpetch, Phuket Vice Governor Samawit Suphanphai, revered national artist Chalermchai Khositphiphat, and the Biennale’s Artistic Director, David Teh. Building on insights and experiences from previous iterations, notably the 2023 Chiang Rai Biennale, this edition will integrate academic symposiums, artist talks, and robust community outreach initiatives to broaden public engagement. "This Biennale is a collective endeavour," Prasop remarked. "It's about uniting artists, cultural organisations, and local communities. We're not merely organising an art event; we're envisaging a future where art propels economic development, tourism growth, and national pride." The Biennale is positioned as a cornerstone of Thailand's Soft Power strategy, aiming to establish the nation as a significant player in the global contemporary art sphere. As anticipation builds, the 2025 Thailand Biennale promises not only to leave an enduring mark on the art world but also to enrich Phuket’s cultural landscape for years to come.
