Accident Cement Truck Crushes Two Girls Outside Petrol Station in Prachinburi

A road crash claimed the life of an 18-year-old girl and left another critically injured after a 22-wheeled cement truck struck and ran over a motorcycle outside a petrol station in Kabin Buri district.

 

The incident occurred at approximately 12:30 on 13 June, on Suwannason Road near a PTT petrol station in the Mueang Kao subdistrict. According to police reports, the driver of the truck was attempting to turn into the station to use the restroom when the vehicle collided with a Honda Wave 100 motorcycle carrying two young women.

 

Emergency services, including rescue workers from the Sajja Phutthatham Foundation and forensic medical staff from Kabin Buri Hospital, arrived at the scene promptly. The truck’s front left wheel had crushed the motorcycle and the two passengers beneath it.

Rescue crews worked for over 30 minutes using hydraulic cutting tools to free the victims. Ms Pichaya, 18, who had been riding pillion, was found alive but severely injured. She was rushed to Kabin Buri Hospital in critical condition.

 

The motorbike’s rider, Ms Chularat Chankaeo, also 18, was found with no detectable pulse and unresponsive. Despite attempts to resuscitate her at the scene, she succumbed to her injuries before reaching hospital.

The lorry driver, identified only as Mr Nat, told investigators he had been travelling from Sa Kaeo province and was unaware he had struck a motorcycle until he noticed something was amiss and stopped to check. “I was shocked when I saw what had happened. I never thought something like this would occur,” he reportedly told police.

 

Police have since escorted Mr Nat for formal questioning and are continuing their investigation. The body of the deceased has been sent to Kabin Buri Hospital.

Thats horrific...    I can't tell - was the truck indicating ?

 

Wife driving yesterday had to slam the brakes on as we turned left and a bike tried to squeeze up the inside... 

 

... but in this case, the girls were travelling along the 'shoulder' which some people call a motorcycle lane - its another reason why travelling up such lanes are so risky.

 

Whenever making a left turn a lot of vehicles often 'veer to the right' to swing in, which encourages motorcyclists to pass up the inside without thinking... I always move across to the left as far as possible to deliberately block any motorcyclists from undertaking as I commit to the turn.

 

This looks like it could be a tragic mistake on behalf of the girls - but the key issue here for me is if the driver indicated or not - thats the only thing which 'could' protect him, although there is also the rule that riders / drivers cannot pass on the left (although this is never followed anyway).

One big problem in Thailand is that indicating is used to show you are manoeuvering, rather than to warn you are about to manoeuver. Drivers will often start indicating and switching lanes/turning at the exact same time and expect other road users to adapt.

So he turned without checking his rearview mirror.

The still pic shows an indicator to be on.

 

The driver never checked his left hand mirror.

Lady over taking up the inside of a truck.

All crazy stuff.

 

Ps it does look like the ladies tried to beat the truck turning.

or at best never noticed the truck slowing down and were unaware of  him about to turn.

If he had practised defensive driving, he would have seen them. In Thai traffic "logic", the bigger vehicle "wins", Thais typically know this and would not attempt to undertake a truck this way.

This is a key point. This is a widely accepted practice in thailand. 

 

Question is ......is riding your motorbike on the shoulder illegal in Thailand? Regardless of the social acceptance as that is irrelevant when it comes to actual laws.

Indeed, it happens everywhere in the country, all the time. The way I interpret this statement is "I have always done this and it was never a problem"… because Thais are usually very wary of trucks and therefore it gives the truck drivers a sense of overconfidence.

They do, but there are also blind spots...     undertaking a slowing truck as it approaches an entrance way to a petrol station does show an exception lack of foresight on the motorcycle riders behalf... 

 

Its why 'rider / driver training' is so important - and why so many here place themselves in positions of grave risks that seem madness to many outside observers...  

 

Its doubtful the rider had any training at all - but training and education of the risks when undertaking may well have saved her life.

There has been a great deal of debate on this issue on this forum alone.... 

 

I am of the opinion that the 'shoulder' is just that - its not a riding or driving lane, and riding in it is more hazardous than commanding your position in the road and travelling at the same speed as the traffic...  Of course, thats not so easily done on 'faster roads' with smaller scooter style motorcycles.

 

Others are of the opinion that the 'shoulder' is actually a motorcycle lane - the confusion arrises because in 'some areas' it is - and what I have called the 'shoulder' is actually marked (with road paint & / or a Sign) as a 'motorcycle lane (in some areas).

 

This inconstancy has led to much conflicted debate...  Nevertheless, the girls were undertaking a slowing turning vehicle, with greater awareness they too would have slowed and saved themselves....  

 

A tragic loss and a horrific way to die.

The assumption there is that the parents can afford a car...  they most likely couldn't.

 

But.... strict and professional driver education and licensing as we are more familiar with in the West may have gone a long way towards ensuring these girls rode with knowledge of the risks and not undertook a slowing vehicle.

There were not turn signals flashing on the truck that I could see and the girls definitely were passing on the shoulder. Very common for scooters to do this and also for trucks to not use signals

Checking the mirror may not have made any difference as the speed of the girls may have put them in his blind spot. Not an excuse just a contributing factor.  I couldn't see any blinkers on the trucker before he started to turn in the video. The girls speed was not helping but thats common here. Scooters like to pass as fast as you can on either side or weave in and out .

The driver has mirrors on his truck to see if vehicles are on his left. As a professional driver he should be using his mirrors. 

He knew that he he was turning, he should have known those girls were on his inside well before turning left. 

 

He killed this young girl, I hope the other girl survives.

I made no such assumption.  I addressed my comment to AN members who have money and kids of driving age.  I've seen decent beaters in Thailand for well under 100K baht.  Look hard enough and you can find one for 30-40K.  In better shape than the cars I drove as a poor student at that age.  Back when CBs were a thing, my handle was "Rust Bucket" and nobody had to guess which car was mine, even from half a mile away.  But it was safe...

 

Even with western standard driver's ed, scooters are 20-40x more dangerous per km driven than cars.  That's from studies done in the USA and Aus.  Drivers ed and helmets help, but they don't equalize the risk.  Not even close.

But look at the still pic, the indicator lamp is on. maybe it was faulty and permanently on. ?

The motorbike was in his blind spot. One of the important rules of  cycling and motorbike riding is to  beware of driver blind spots. Never ever get close to a big rig.

 It is not possible to determine if he checked his mirror. The fact is that when the turn was being made, the  motorbike was in the blind spot.

I get your point, but the used cars give a false sense of security. Aside from the mechanical concerns, the construction  quality is flimsy and  it's like  stepping on a soda can when they are hit.  Some drivers are still going to speed and do stupid things, whether it is a car or scooter. A bad scooter driver is going to be a bad  automobile driver. Millions of Thais have survived while driving their scooters. Sometimes it is luck, other times, it is actually decent driving skills and situational awareness.

I agree. However, there are blind spot mirrors which these trucks are usually equipped with. Turning left on a large road is perhaps the most accident-prone manoeuver one can perform in Thailand – when I do it, I am extra careful, these bikes just turn up out of nowhere all the time.

 

This was an unfortunate combination of two major driving errors, which are so widespread and recurrent in this country (usually involving cars rather than trucks) that I am actually surprised these accidents don't happen more often…

He should have been aware of the bike way before the bike got to the blind spot.

They were almost certainly in the blind spot. The distance you can travel at that speed in just 3 or 4 seconds could have put them there. You dont check mirrors every second while driving. Your rotate thru them and if you check you side mirror and the scooter is well behind you  it can travel that distance before you check back.

 

I had that exact thing happen to me.  Girl was well behind me. I turned on my signal and she was still behind. Started my turn and she decided to speed pass on the left side and slide down the whole side if the truck.  Happens all the time here as there is no driver awareness for scooter drivers and sadly no enforcement from police. Life goes on as usual
