Police have dismantled a drug trafficking network operating in Kalasin, after an Austrian man was discovered to have swallowed more than 1,000 methamphetamine pills, some of which ruptured inside his stomach.

The man, identified as 43-year-old Mr Wolfgang, collapsed from seizures at Don Mueang Airport on 10 June. He was rushed to hospital where doctors initially found 255 pills, but further surgery found a total of 1,067 methamphetamine pills in his stomach. Medical staff confirmed that the pills had been wrapped in plastic bags, one of which had burst, prompting the emergency.

Following the incident, Police Lieutenant General Saksira Phueak-am, Commander of the Tourist Police, ordered an urgent investigation. Police Colonel Ekkaphop Inthavivat, head of Tourist Police Division 2, coordinated with Police Colonel Thananthorn Rattanasittiphak, Commander of Region 4 and related agencies to trace the source of the drugs.

The investigation quickly led authorities to Kalasin Province, where search warrants were obtained from the provincial court to search the homes of Wolfgang’s Thai wife and of a suspected dealer named Prem.

During the raids on 13 June, officers discovered 244 methamphetamine pills, 1.47 grammes of crystal methamphetamine and nine other pieces of incriminating evidence. Urine tests on Prem, also confirmed the use of illegal substances.

The suspect Prem, was taken into custody and charged, before being transferred along with the seized evidence to Huai Mek Police Station for legal proceedings. Police say they are continuing to expand the investigation and are now targeting additional members of the drug network.

Authorities have not yet confirmed how Wolfgang planned to transport the drugs or whether he intended to act as a courier for international trafficking. However, officials say the scale and method of concealment point towards organised criminal operations.
