How to catch a gecko?

There is a cute little gecko that must have been in my apartment now for at least a few weeks.

 

Ocasionally I see it on the kitchen counter, but then it scurries into corners .... out of sight. 

 

They are fast. So how to catch it without harming it?

 

I just want to let it loose outside. 

 

They are harmless, right? It won't crawl into my ear at night and eat my brains?

i'm guessing it's a jin-jok and not a gecko? (geckos much larger, grey and can be aggresive) if it wants to go outside it will, they are harmless. keep it around. he'll eat all the mossies!

They are harmless, a net is about the only way to catch them. We leave them alone and they clean up the bugs.

Your home is their home. I once caught one at my condo and placed it outside in the floor area. Guess what, when I opened the door a few hours later it jumped back into my room.

They usually hide behind the curtains, I spray with him Baygon, it stuns them, then I catch them when they fall and then ultimately throw them out the window.

I don't mind keeping it as a pet as long as it's not plotting to murder me.

What is Baygon? Is it toxic? Doesn't kill them? 

It's not the same spray they use for cockroaches, is it?

It's fly spray, it doesn't kill them, but it would eventually kill the very small ones.  I break their necks and that's what kills them.

any and all lizard like creatures are dispatched to lizard heaven.  If I don't get them, my cat does.

If you want a pet, get a cat. They'll take care of the geckos and anything else that moves

They're in your house for a reason. Food. They eat bugs daily, and seeing this is the tropics, where bugs abound all year long, they're given a free ride by myself and many others. They aren't easy to catch unless you have those sticky fly traps and can release them quickly after they are caught, which usually happens at night. The same for the Huntsman Spider. They're in there for a reason.

The first time I saw it, it was on top of the rubbish bin.

I have started using smaller garbage bags and changing more frequently.

If you can use a closed container that will help, but they'll still stay if you have any insects, and insects can get in many ways, especially with the failed sealing and screens that aren't good that come with many homes and apartments here.

The best way I've found is to spray them with an abundant amount of insect spray, as it acts as a tranquilizer and more or less paralyzes them, which gives you the ability to snag them and eliminate them. It even works on huge ml lizards, most animals have a tremendous aversion to insect spray, it's really quite a miraculous tool. I've used it to get rid of stray cats that were hanging out at the house making a lot of noise, and they never came back.

There are no screens. The landlord who also lives in the building, keeps the windows closed at all times and runs the AC 24/7 and she thinks everyone wants to do the same. Her AC bill is well over 5000 Baht per month. 

 

I prefer the fan with windows open unless it's unbearably hot. There's no need for constant AC. And I like the nice breeze that fans create.

Great stuff,  if it doesn’t poison them it will give them cancer.

I keep my doors and windows closed all day as the bugs here will always be inside no matter what I do. It's hard enough getting rid of the few that manage to get in when a door is opened, and you spend time while watching TV swatting at flies and trying to kill gnats that are in your face.

 

Many here do spend all day in AC homes and apartments because of the bugs and I don't understand why live here if you can't enjoy the climate.

 

I lived in Texas for 32 years, which is hotter on average than Thailand, but the bugs here are tenfold above there, and all year long. In Texas you at least get a break from October to February so you can spend more time outdoors in the evenings. Many have bug lights that zap the mosquitoes and others, or use Citronella candles. That's one reason I don't mind a few lizards in the house, as they keep whatever gets in in check.

Mine bring them in and some escape.

So cats make it even worse.

 

I catch them with a broom and the thing you wipe the dust in.

 

Worse are the big but very fast and loud tokay's !

Your gecko problem will never go away with a home like that.

From my experience catching lizards in California as a kid...

 

Come up on the backside out of its sight slowly and then GRAB IT!!

 

If you don't get it out it will die bc there's no food for it. A few weeks back I found a tiny malnourished gecko in the condo. Easy catch

I presume you mean 'Jing- jok', which is the common Thai word for Gecko. I have yet to come across an aggressive Gecko, not even the larger Tokay. Otherwise, I agree with you. We leave them to get on with their mossie eating duties.

You can buy plastic screening easy enough. Just tape it outside the windows. Assume you're not going to be there forever. Custom sliding screen about b1500 Bangkok

They are not harmless, they <deleted> all over the place and down the walls as well as getting in the trash, never seen one eat a mosquito. I spray the bastards to knock them down then whack them and flush down toilet.

I have cats and birds.  The birds are probably more vicious than the cat.  They keep the jingjoes populations in check in the kitchen. As far a jingjoes, whenever I see jingjo poop, I think, "dead mosquitoes."  

All is well in the world.

Leave it. They eat ants. The only problem I've had with them is when they die behind a cupboard or something and you notice the smell.
