Central Vietnam is reeling from the devastating effects of Typhoon Wutip, which brought heavy rains, flooding, and destruction, resulting in nine fatalities and two individuals still missing. The powerful storm, hitting provinces from Quang Binh to Quang Nam since Wednesday, has inundated vast areas and disrupted daily life.

As of Saturday afternoon, floodwaters began to recede, revealing the storm's severe toll on the region. Authorities have reported that nine people, hailing from Hue, Quang Tri, and Quang Binh, lost their lives due to the flooding, with two people still unaccounted for in Quang Binh. Tragically, the death toll has increased from the previous day as more bodies were recovered. Among the victims were Le Phuoc Thuong, age 26, and Le Phuoc Trinh, age 48, whose bodies were discovered near Phuong Binh Commune in Hue. They perished when strong currents caused their boat to capsize while they were with another individual, Le Phuoc Tuong, attempting to construct a family tomb. Fortunately, Tuong survived the ordeal.

Phong Binh Commune in Hue stands out as one of the hard-hit areas, with significant agricultural damage reported: over 670 hectares of rice, 30 hectares of cassava, 1.5 hectares of peanuts, and 3.5 hectares of lotus fields have been devastated. Across the wider region, over 3,500 homes were flooded, and an estimated 88,000 hectares of crops have been submerged, impacting the livelihood of thousands.

The impact extended to transportation and events, with more than 20 flights delayed or canceled at Da Nang Airport on Thursday. Additionally, a beauty pageant final intended to take place on the Huong River was postponed due to the adverse weather conditions.

Typhoon Wutip, which has now weakened into a tropical depression after wreaking havoc in China’s Guangdong Province, continues to move inland toward the northeast, gradually losing its force. As the region grapples with the aftermath, rescue operations and recovery efforts remain underway, with authorities and communities working to restore normalcy and prevent further loss of life and property.
