Crime 15-Year-Old Boy Shoots Father in Domestic Abuse Case in Buriram

A 15-year-old boy has been taken into custody after allegedly shooting his biological father eight times, leaving him in critical condition, in what appears to be a case stemming from years of domestic abuse.

 

Police investigators from Lam Plai Mat Police Station were called to a house in Moo 13, Ban Nong Hua Chang Pattana, Phai Rinn Subdistrict, Lam Plai Mat District, following reports of a shooting late on the evening of 17 June. Upon arrival, officers found that the suspect, a teenage boy, had used a 9mm handgun to fire multiple rounds at his 51-year-old father, Mr. Choksan striking him once under the right armpit. The bullet remained lodged inside the victim, who was rushed to Buriram Hospital in critical condition.

 

Lam Plai Mat Police Superintendent, Pol. Col. Watchirawit Wannathani, personally questioned the boy, referred to as “A” who admitted to shooting his father out of long-standing resentment. The boy claimed he had suffered repeated physical abuse from his father, being slapped, punched and kicked, from the age of eight, with no one able to protect him.

 

According to the boy’s testimony, the final incident occurred when his father assaulted him in front of his mother. Enraged and desperate, the teenager retrieved his father’s firearm from upstairs, loaded it using knowledge he said he gleaned from YouTube and fired until the magazine was empty, unaware of how many bullets struck his father. He later expressed remorse, stating he felt cornered and had no other way out after enduring years of abuse.

 

The boy’s 63-year-old grandmother, Ms. Noi confirmed the family’s troubled history. She said her grandson, the eldest of four siblings, had been the sole target of his father’s violent outbursts. Injuries over the years included a split eyebrow, head wounds and a dislodged teeth from a kick to the mouth, which left him unable to eat for days. Just ten days prior to the shooting, the teenager confided in her, asking, “Why was I born? Why do I have to suffer like this?” and “If I killed someone, would it be a big sin?” She pleaded with him to forgive his father and avoid violence, but the incident unfolded nonetheless.

 

Police recovered a 9mm automatic pistol at the scene. Pol. Col. Watchirawit stated that investigators are working to confirm the legal ownership of the weapon. No formal charges have yet been filed as authorities coordinate with prosecutors and a multidisciplinary child protection team to conduct a formal interview with the suspect in accordance with juvenile justice procedures.
