Phuket has set a new Guinness World Record for the largest simultaneous stir-fry of Hokkien noodles, marking a highlight of this year's Phuket Peranakan Festival. The record was clinched yesterday at Saphan Hin, as confirmed by local officials.

The event was a collaborative effort, showcasing the rich culinary heritage of Phuket on a global stage. Organised by the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation (PPAO) alongside the Phuket City Municipality, the Peranakan Association of Thailand, and other local and international bodies, it aimed to celebrate and elevate the rich tapestry of the island's cultural cuisine.

Presided over by Phuket Vice Governor Suwit Phansengiam, the ceremony gathered a host of notable figures including PPAO President Rewat Areerob and Peranakan Association founder Anchalee Vanich Thepbutr. These dignitaries, alongside others, acted as witnesses to the event, adding gravitas to the achievement with the acceptance of the Guinness World Record certificate.

In a remarkable display, 846 bowls of Hokkien noodles were meticulously arranged to spell out ‘PHUKET’. Participants expertly stir-fried the noodles over 20 minutes, ensuring each bowl met the required 100 grammes. Health teams were on site to oversee food safety and hygiene, with 508 bowls officially meeting the stringent criteria set by Guinness World Records, thereby creating a new record category.

Reflecting the festival's dedication to sustainability, the prepared noodles were donated to the Sustainable Tourism Development Foundation. They were then distributed to 300 children at the Phuket Special Education Centre, aligning the event with a zero food waste ethos.

The record endeavour was part of a broader celebration, featuring a parade with 800 participants carrying bowls of noodles, and an International Peranakan Performance Show. This vibrant cultural exhibition culminated with a communal sharing of the noodles, followed by an evening orchestra performance, leaving attendees with a sense of community and festivity.
