Notice to All Members: Emergency Membership Meeting of the Chiang Mai Expats Club

Date: Saturday, 30 August
Time: 10:00 a.m.
Venue: 3rd Floor, Duangtawan Hotel Chiang Mai (
https://share.google/g1UEAeAxpDUgaBiK9)

Agenda:
1. Election of a new Board of Directors
2. Establishment of a new partnership to assume organizational responsibilities under Thai Law
3. Alternatively, formal dissolution of the Organization

Dear Esteemed Members,

With the deepest respect and a spirit of thoughtful reflection, we address you concerning matters of great importance to our shared community.

At the close of last year, the prior Board tendered its resignations, necessitating the rapid formation of an interim committee entrusted with guiding our organization into a new chapter. This committee, supported by a dedicated cadre of members, has pursued its responsibilities with earnestness and integrity, achieving meaningful progress and a genuine commitment to our collective welfare.

However, we must acknowledge the enduring challenges that have shaped our current reality. The Club has experienced a steady demographic contraction within our membership, most notably a shrinking cadre of active participants from the Expat community in Chiang Mai. Compounding this, there has been noticeable hesitation among members to assume leadership roles and fulfill responsibilities essential to sustaining our organizational functions, despite repeated outreach from the presidency.

Surveys conducted during this period indicate a waning interest in expanding activities and events, revealing a dissonance between our aspirations and the broader will of the membership. Consequently, the operational burden has fallen predominantly upon a small group of devoted individuals—an arrangement that is neither sustainable nor tenable in the long term.

After careful and heartfelt consideration, the Board has reached a solemn and unanimous conclusion: under the present conditions, the continued existence of the Organization is not viable. It is with genuine regret that we must proceed with a formal dissolution.

Please be aware that anyone objecting to the Dissolution of the club must be prepared to assume the legal role of the General Partner of the Partnership and have a full contingent Board of Directors in place and ready to assume control as of that day, most of the Board members will have or will be resigning that day.

We extend our deepest gratitude to every member who has contributed time, effort, and spirit to our community over the years. Whether your involvement has been large or small, you have helped shape the fabric of our shared journey.

To honor our commitments and with the utmost transparency, we will undertake all necessary steps toward an orderly dissolution, under our bylaws and applicable regulations. Further information will be provided as appropriate to ensure clarity, fairness, and respect for all involved.

It is our sincere hope that the values and memories forged within this community will endure in your hearts and that the spirit of what we have built may find new and meaningful expression in your future endeavors.

With the highest regard and deepest appreciation,

On behalf of the Board of Directors

I am also a "lifetime" member. Our subscriptions will be good for the "lifetime" of the club, so I suspect no refund...

Maybe transferred to the new one? (You got that letter?)

Of course I got the letter---it was I who posted it here!

When you read that message, you can see that the board concluded that: "the continued existence of the Organization is not viable". I would be very surprised if anyone revives it.

Nancy Lindley was the heart and soul of the CM Expat Club since being elected president in 2014. Before that, she had served as a board member for several years.

Her election followed turmoil caused by the incumbent whose multiple businesses were club sponsors accused of misconduct.

She effectively "cleaned house" and led the organization until her untimely passing in 2022.

Unless someone of her stature steps up to lead the club it will die a slow death.

Truer words were never spoken about the CM Expat Club and NancyL.

I won't go into a big eulogy about her efforts but - in short - she helped a LOT of people in CM through her work at the CM Expat Club and her tireless volunteer efforts at various charitable organizations and local hospitals.

Quite frankly, she was a major positive influence in the CM expat community overall.

Thank you for reminding us of her contributions.

As a golden rule in Thailand, keep at bay in bonding with other foreigners, unless really necessary, Far to many people with XXL ego issues, or others with doubtful backgrounds. At the end of the day it can..I say it can, lead to avoidable problems and trouble. So I keep at large and socialise with strangers here and there who I will never meet again - and it goes fine like that.

I think the same as you said. I recall having a best friend, close coworkers, family and friends.

It could be that excluding that lot seems this indeed is an acceptable reality

Yeah, bragging (American) old men.

A lot of freaks too.

If Chiang Mai has a hash, join that to fast-track social integration.

Au contraire, suzanne.

The dramatic increase in their cost of living has left the the retired farang demographic with less buying power than they ever had in Thailand.

If the ones you know are "...dropping hints about how much money..." they have, maybe they're trying to scam you in some way.

Actually it did occur to me that the atmosphere was ripe for scams.

Makro is a great place to meet other farangs, just open your mouth and say hello, the friendly ones smile and say hello back.

That is true all over Thailand and great advice for those who are retired here and are wanting to meet other Expats (and take the risk they are not a nutter).  Those who are at Makro with their Thai wife, tend to be long stayers and living long term - as opposed to the 2 week millionaires and sexpats by themselves at the beach, mall, or in 7/11 etc.  In my experience there are a lot more of the 'OK' type of Expat in CM and Isan and Hua Hin than any other parts of Thailand - by a mile.  My best tip for the nutters - look at how they dress and talk, and how their wife looks (ex bar girl?) and how 'happy' she is.  If you do get phone Line etc. details - later ask your Thai wife what she thinks of the guy's Thai wife (they know straight away).  Learned that the hard way early on back in the early days - nutters are too much trouble and hard to 'get rid of'.
