In a dawn skirmish on Thailand's northern border, the Task Force Chao Taksin, part of the Pha Muang Force, engaged in a tense shootout with drug traffickers attempting to smuggle a trove of methamphetamine. The confrontation, occurring as the group tried to transport 32 backpacks filled with drugs into Thailand, resulted in the deaths of two traffickers, while all military personnel escaped unharmed.

The incident unfolded yesterday morning at 7:15 am, as Colonel Anuwat Panyanan led his team on a routine patrol. The unit spotted a suspicious group of 25 to 30 individuals loading modified backpacks onto an Isuzu pickup truck, bearing licence plates from Lamphun province. When the soldiers identified themselves and sought to conduct a search, the traffickers resorted to gunfire, initiating a fierce exchange that lasted about 10 minutes.

In response, reinforcements were swiftly deployed to secure the scene, enabling a detailed investigation. The confrontation site yielded 32 modified backpacks, a long-barrelled shotgun, a grenade, two communication radios, and shell casings from AK-47 rifles. Despite the escape of the remaining traffickers back across the border, their abandoned contraband was seized by the authorities.

Subsequent inspection revealed the backpacks contained a staggering six million methamphetamine pills alongside two backpacks of crystal meth, weighing around 64 kilogrammes. The sizeable haul, with an estimated market value in the tens of millions, was transferred to the Mae Fa Luang Police Station for legal proceedings.

Reflecting on the operation, Major General Kidakorn Chantra praised the prompt actions of Colonel Anuwat and his team, emphasising the importance of heightened security measures in border areas notorious for drug smuggling. The Pha Muang Force has been instrumental in curbing illicit cross-border activities, a challenge exacerbated by the difficult terrain and the increasing ingenuity of traffickers.

The incident underscores the ongoing battle against the drug trade in Southeast Asia, where authorities are continually adapting their strategies in response to evolving smuggling tactics. As Thailand grapples with this persistent issue, the vigilance of its border forces remains a crucial barrier against the tide of illegal substances affecting the region.

The methamphetamine crisis remains a pressing issue, with impacts felt across Asia. The proactive approach of the Thai military highlights the nation's determination to intercept and dismantle trafficking networks that extend far beyond its borders.

So long as that deathly chemical stays removed from circulation and is destroyed it is not a bad  result despite the deaths .

Yet it's cheaper than candy and more available than ever
