Getting Vietnamese Dong in Chiang Mai

Featured Replies

Just been to SK Exchange on Charoenprathet Road to exchange some Thai Baht for Vietnamese Dong.

They don’t have any and said they don’t know when they will have any as there in no Vietnamese Dong coming in.

Tried another place on Charoenprathet Road and they had none either.

Any ideas where to get some in Chiang Mai or do we have to wait until we arrive in Vietnam?

When I previously wanted some Laos kip I went to numerous places, none were able to help. Then I went to a small place near Thapae gate and within an hour they sourced some.

Sorry, bit vague as I can't remember name of it. If it wasn't on Ratvithi road, then it was definitely the road before that heading back towards Thapae gate. Only a few shops into the road.

Apologies that I can't be more specific but they were very helpful in my circumstances.

Having watched the movie 16 Candles, I thought this thread about Dong was going to be something completely different.

Concur with that. I was short changed by about 12.5% but only got a very small amount in Thailand to pay for taxi transfer and some first evening provisions.

On arrival at the international airport Ho Chi Mien city or Hanoi, there's several official exchange booths, well signed, just to the side of the baggage carousels (10 seconds or less walk).

All staff at the exchange booths (and all over the airports) speak English, friendly, well organzed and focused.

In both cities I've exchanged: AUD, USD, ThaiBaht for Dong. no hassles.

Baggage comes quickly. After passport control take the escalator down and you choose:

1) Money exchange booths right there. Or

2) Claim baggage then 10 seconds walk to exchange booths.

Then keep walking out to the taxi, hotel meet/greet area.

At Ho Chi Mien airort (and eveywhere) better to use VinaSun taxi, quaranteed no cheating.

VinaSun taxi company not available in Hanoi.

After you've conncted with taxi / hotel the driver (or supervisor) will take you to a waiting spot (undercover), driver will then quickly recover the car from taxi parking area and come back and pick you up, usually less than 2 minutes.

Use your Thai debit card in the ATM at your Viet arrival airport.

Take some Thai Baht or US dollars as backup.

I always took Thai 5x 1,000bht notes.
