Never since I990 have I ever heard anybody call Bangkok the Big Mango. Except some characters in books.

I will use the term in writing on rare occasion almost always as a lark - never verbally . The Big Smoke is another better and *if ya know ya know*  term.

What I'm laughing at is

The Venice of the East

Only in 1960s bw travellogues 😂😂

I'm sure it was thought far more as a muddy backwater. Compare to HCMC and PNH

I used to love travelling by boat which I did every day from the Kao San Road area to the Siam Square area.

I used to arrive at DMK then BKK and take the train b5 to hualumpong and a long tail b5 to KSR

From airport to KSR in about 1 hr

Khlong Saen Saep canal boats used to be one of the best ways to get around, Ramkhamhaeng to Chao Phraya river.
