Authorities evacuated residents in Nong Prue, Chonburi, due to an ammonia leak at a local ice factory, which spread a pungent odour within a 100-metre radius.

On 13th July, the Pattaya Rescue Radio Centre received alerts of an ammonia leak from an ice factory in Soi Noen Plub Wan, Nong Prue. Firefighters, local police, and rescue volunteers were dispatched to manage the situation.

The factory, situated in a residential area, emitted a strong ammonia smell, affecting those within 100 metres and causing nasal irritation.

Authorities promptly evacuated nearby residents to safety and collaborated with factory staff to seal the ammonia tank valves. Firefighters used water sprays to disperse the airborne gas and prevent further spread.

Residents reported that ammonia smells from the factory are not uncommon, but this instance was particularly intense. They urged officials to ensure the area's safety.

The situation was eventually brought under control, with the ammonia odour dissipating, allowing residents to return home. No severe impacts were reported. Investigations will follow to determine the cause and implement preventive measures.

Is ammonia one of those compounds that naturally has a powerful smell or is it like natural gas in that a tell-tail odor is added.

It stinks to high heaven....and it's immaterial if a scent is added of not.....you are still breathing in that gas.

If locals can stand the stench of those 'sniffers' they stick in their nostrils a noseful of ammonia 880 should not be injurious. Clears blocked sinuses in seconds. 😀
