British Tourist Offers Cannabis Instead of Cash for Bangkok-Pattaya Taxi

Ah yes, the old “all weed users are brain-damaged misfits” trope—textbook sweeping generalization. That’s like saying all wine drinkers are closet alcoholics with liver failure.

Cannabis users range from doctors to artists to CEOs. Meanwhile, alcohol—society’s favorite legal poison—has a far stronger link to actual brain damage, violence, and public embarrassment.

If you’re gonna throw shade, at least bring data. Otherwise, you're just emotionally venting with zero intellectual traction.

Agree, more Reefer Madness. The government and the media seem desperate to create more drama and much to do about nothing to back up their (Announcements aka so called laws) . Remember when they were seizing land and boats in America if they caught you with a joint? People getting raided at home and shot dead with a tv remote in hand?  Former C.I.A clown Bushes grand ideas. Now that I have taken a hit to calm down I am having ideas of running outside naked.

Yanks will not be pushed aside by those damned redcoats when it comes to stupidity.

There was a guy in Florida (where prostitution is illegal) who propositioned a streetwalker who took his money and immediately ran off.  He then tracked her down and called in the police, explained he paid for a bj which she didn't provide and that the officer should tell her to make good on the deal or arrest her.

Long may it wave!

Must have singled it from back home.

Thailand better overhaul their current visa waiver scheme completely including the first world.

Too many "Quality Tourists" making headlines_each day.

What a low life ever believed weed serves "currency".

Summoned to the Pattaya City Police Station, the tourist explained that he hadn’t intended to use the cannabis as payment, claiming it was a misunderstanding while attempting to locate an ATM.

Excuse Impossible.

Even if that taxi driver only got limited comprehension of English language,

he can never mistake the request of nearby ATM search for weed as the method of payment.

Lucky so*; Thai driver on!y needed  fare justice without further intention to  prosecute that Quality Tourist.

He might have happened to  have a "prescription" needed to get it lol.

Even the thickest Brit is many, many levels of intelligence above the brainiest Aussie. Fact.

Could it have been lost in translation?

More BS.

The tourist understood quickly enough at the police station.

Good on the taxi driver for reporting him, and good for the police for sorting it out.

As for searching for an ATM, I am sure that he could have found several on the ground side at the airport, BEFORE getting a taxi.

no mention that the taxi driver was overcharging !

They agreed on the fare to start with before they even left the airport.

The incident unfolded when the tourist claimed he had insufficient funds, offering only 900 baht, far short of the 2,000 baht agreed fare. In lieu of money, he allegedly pulled out a large packet of cannabis, sparking a heated exchange.

Knowing the agreed fee in advance and know the money in pocket, it's easy to ask the taxi driver to stop by an ATM to withdraw the the remaining needed and already agreed payment...:whistling:

Are there NO ATMs at the ground side of the airport that he could have used?

I thought the official price from Swampy to Pattaya was around 1,200 or something like that? Definitely not 2,000, so the taxi driver was breaking the law anyway...

What"official Price"........these you have in Bus transfers or Train:cheesy:

The taxi driver should have been arrested. It's a scam to charge 2,000 Baht for that ride.

Cannabis is illegal now without a license. What is going on here? He didn't pay for his ride -- but the bigger issue is the cannabis. How was this ignored? Is it illegal or not without a prescription? This is so confusing.

That's about the right fare nowadays including tolls, Bell bus 190 baht.

Afraid that's the going rate nowadays from those thieving bar stewards outside the airport

BKK has domestic flights too!

And I always arrange a 900 baht taxi ride in advance. 2000  baht is criminal to start with.

All good questions!

More proof as how the " hippy drug" messes with your mind. Just imagine what this guy will get up to...Amazing Thailand.

Not sure what's more ridiculous: tourists not having 2000 baht, or a taxi driver scamming his way to a 2000 far for a ride that could easily be had for 1000. All sides on this are ridiculous.

Felt taken advantage of? After attempting to charge twice the fare? cry me a river.

There should be at least some additional compensation for the taxi driver.

Why? He's already scammed his way to a double fare. There really should be legal limits to airport fares that are enforced. You can easily get a 1000 baht ride to Pattaya from a more honest driver.

Well some likely turn up with no local money! Damned if I am paying the silly rates at Thomas Cook in a UK airport.

When was the last time you heard of a taxi passenger offering to part  settle the bill  with a bottle of vodka. ? Moscow maybe .,?
