Thailand is ramping up efforts to curb the sale of cannabis-laced sweets that contain tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) exceeding legal limits. The government expressed concerns over the potential impact on children and young people consuming these products, which often include jelly candies and other edibles.

Nationwide Inspection Drive

In a bid to tackle this issue, the Ministry of Public Health is collaborating with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and provincial health offices to increase inspections. The crackdown aims to ensure that products containing cannabis extracts comply with safety standards.

Adding to this, the Narcotics Suppression Bureau and the Office of the Narcotics Control Board have been enlisted to inspect cannabis shops nationwide, ensuring adherence to the law.

Legal Consequences for Violators

Deputy government spokeswoman Sasikarn Watthanachan highlighted the penalties for shop owners violating these regulations. Those caught mixing cannabis into food without proper authorisation or failing to label products with THC warnings face severe consequences. This includes fines up to 30,000 baht (approximately £675) and potential imprisonment for up to three years.

Furthermore, selling products with THC levels over the legal threshold could lead to fines of up to 20,000 baht (around £450) and a jail term of up to two years, or both.

Government's Stance

The Thai government emphasises the importance of safeguarding public health, particularly for children and teenagers. By reinforcing regulations around cannabis-infused products, the authorities aim to mitigate risks associated with indiscriminate consumption and ensure that all products are clearly labelled for consumer safety.

This renewed focus on regulation comes amidst broader discussions about cannabis use in the country, reflecting Thailand's cautious yet progressive stance on managing cannabis products. With these stringent measures, the government hopes to strike a balance between innovation in cannabis-derived goods and public welfare.

As this initiative unfolds, shop owners and consumers alike will need to stay informed about the latest regulations to avoid potential legal pitfalls. This decisive action reinforces Thailand's ongoing commitment to public health and safety in the evolving context of cannabis use and regulation.

With these stringent measures

None were outlined.

A nationwide crackdown on thousands upon thousands of establishments?

Will the local Plod inspect every premises?

Is each shop producing it's own gummies or are there manufacturers?

Citizens should remain vigilant

The stupidity in all of this is typically Thailand

All they needed to do is keep everything the same and give businesses a year to sell down stock and wind down leases.

After one year - it's all effectively illegal and easy for cops to tidy up

Of course, nothing is ever that simple in Thailand.

Products like these have always been available aimed at those that don't smoke, but still want the effect.

Pushed their luck too far this time

I am not against cannabis although i don't partake. But I'd rather have people consuming Cannabis in the form of edibles rather than smoking it outside in public spaces  (like so many do) where unfortunately  one who doesn't indulge in that has no choice in many instances to breathe it in when walking by (including kids). No fun, specially when those candidly smoking it outside like nobody cares, specially when they roll up spliffs with weed containing 20plus THC that really gets to your head even as second-hand smoke ....Freedom is great but it entails responsibilities.

I agree.I see many potheads smoking on the streets of Bangkok and don't care nothing as long as they get high.

These kind of people is trash who never have working and begging money and live on social welfare.

Saving money for a one-way ticket to Bangkok and walk around doing nothing then smoke weed.

I'm sure he does......

The problem lies withe the shop selling him it at 15 years old, not the product itself.

Your argument is as pathetic as no alcohol to be sold in proximity to schools, rather than not selling it to under age people.
